About The Position

Lightmatter is seeking an experienced Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join our Laser and Photonics Packaging Team. In this role, you will be responsible for the optical and mechanical design, component selection, and packaging of next-generation laser and photonics modules, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in opto-mechanical design.
  • Hands-on experience with Zemax for optical design.
  • Hands-on experience with SolidWorks for 3D modeling.
  • Experience collaborating with suppliers and OSATs from prototyping to volume production.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Lumerical or other optical design software.
  • Hands-on experience with optical alignment and validation.
  • Knowledge of optical modules in the datacom industry.
  • Experience with hermetic and non-hermetic packaging techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the optical and mechanical design of laser modules and detachable connectors.
  • Communicate design concepts, technical findings, and project status clearly.
  • Contribute to optical design of lenses and FAU arrays, and possess a strong understanding of isolator technologies.
  • Design packaging solutions for DFB lasers in Chip-on-Submount (CoS) configurations and for heterogeneously integrated III-V on Silicon wafers.
  • Ensure PIC designs are optimized for assembly processes such as wire bonding and flip-chip bonding.
  • Select critical components, including optical assemblies, electrical connectors and optical connectors.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and OSATs (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) from prototype manufacturing through validation and into volume production.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and successful product delivery.
