About The Position

The Optical Trainer plays a key role in the onboarding, development, and ongoing education of all optical shop employees. This position ensures consistency in service, product knowledge, and operational excellence across all locations. The Optical Trainer will collaborate with leadership to develop training materials, deliver in-person and virtual instruction, and coach staff to uphold the highest standards of patience care and performance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Certified Optician or American Board of Opticianry (ABO) Certification strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in an optical setting, with at least 1 year in a training or supervisory role.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong knowledge of optical products, lens technology, and retail operations.
  • Ability to travel regularly to various locations.
  • Comfortable with technology and EMR systems; experience with training software a plus.
  • Passion for teaching and developing others.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and continuously improve training programs for new hires and existing team members across multiple optical locations.
  • Train staff on optical products, sales techniques, customer service, insurance billing, and electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
  • Conduct regular on-site visits to provide hands-on training, coaching, and performance feedback.
  • Collaborate with managers to identify training needs, skill gaps, and opportunities for development.
  • Maintain up-to-date training manuals, materials, and standard operating procedures.
  • Support new store openings or staff transitions by leading orientation and training efforts.
  • Monitor training effectiveness through assessments, performance metrics, and feedback.
  • Stay current on industry trends, lens technologies, frame lines, and best practices in optical retail.
  • Travel to regional clinics and optical shops required (valid driver’s license needed).
  • Promote a positive learning environment and act as a role model for professional behavior and exceptional patient care.
  • The annual completion of assigned Learning Management System (LMS) courses is mandatory.  Any individual who has not completed their assigned training prior to November 30th of each year may be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
