About The Position

In this role as a summer engineering intern you will support the design, analysis, and manufacturing of world-class, high-precision opto-mechanical systems, as well as hyperspectral imaging systems. This is a dynamic position for an individual to work as part of Corning Advanced Optics' Aerospace and Defense engineering team to develop custom precision opto-mechanical systems based on Keene's world-class precision machining core competency. Primary duties will involve working within optical metrology team to design, engineer & build opto-mechanical systems and hyperspectral imaging systems including development of testing approach and instrumentation

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Optics or related discipline with concentration in Optics or hyperspectral imaging
  • Basic understanding of optical systems and optical metrology
  • High level of technical curiosity and ability to learn, develop, and advance technical skills in precision engineering and opto-mechanical product development.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2026 (May-August 2026) with a graduation date of December 2026 or later
  • Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity.
  • Be willing to work at the posted job location

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to use experimentation to develop basic process knowledge, design prototype test systems, and perform proof of principle testing to validate metrology approach.
  • Confidence in interaction with all levels of the organization. (Production techs to Sr. Leadership)
  • Experience with interferometry, MTF, and other optical metrology instruments
  • Ability to function on a product development team of multi-disciplinary engineers.
  • Working knowledge of analysis tools such as MatLab or Excel.
