About The Position

General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world's leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies. General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) is rapidly expanding its Optical Technologies Group, building a world-class, vertically integrated capability in multi-spectral space and airborne electro-optical (EO) payloads, optical communication terminals (OCTs), adaptive optics (AO), missile seekers, and directed energy (DE) systems. Our mission is to deliver cutting-edge technologies that protect the nation and its warfighters. We invest heavily in optics and photonics infrastructure, internal R&D, and employee-focused technical training. We seek an optical engineer with a strong working understanding of optical analysis, alignment, and testing to contribute to the development and integration of complex optical systems. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment and can interpret high level direction to practical requirement and deliverables.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; four or more years of experience with a bachelors degree or two or more years of experience with a masters degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Hands-on experience with optical integration and alignment.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Python for modeling and data analysis.
  • Familiarity with optical design tools (Zemax, Code V, or equivalent).
  • Background in applied optics, physics, electro-optical systems.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in multi-disciplinary technical teams.
  • U.S. citizenship with ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with interferometry or wavefront sensing approaches
  • Familiarity with optical control systems

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to design, modeling, integration, and testing of advanced electro-optical systems.
  • Perform parametric studies and analyses to support design decisions.
  • Develop alignment and test procedures.
  • Independently perform hands-on optical alignment, assembly, and precision testing.
  • Develop scripts and algorithms to capture and process test data (MATLAB, Python).
  • Utilize optical design software (Zemax, Code V, or equivalent) for conceptual and detailed optical system design.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (opto-mechanics, scientists, mechanisms, algorithms) to develop optical solutions.
  • Contribute to technical reports and briefings.
  • Ensure compliance with company standards, program security requirements, and safe laboratory practices.
