About The Position

This DOH Sub Nurse position will provide school clinic assistance and/or relief to any of the Alachua County Department of Health assigned schools. They are directly supervised by the Alachua County Health Department (ACHD) School Health Coordinator RN Supervisor in coordination with the Alachua County Public Schools (ACPS) Health Services Supervisor and Principal of the school assigned. The nurse shall be responsible and accountable for making decisions that are based upon the individual’s educational preparation, scope of practice and experience in nursing. This position will provide professional nursing services by coordinating and providing clinical services/activities in the school clinic(s). They will direct the work of the health technician if one is assigned to clinic. This nursing position functions under approved ACPS and DOH policies, protocols, and procedures. It is the nurse’s responsibility to supervise the school’s clinic by establishing safe clinic procedures ensuring compliance with policies, protocols, and other instructions provided by coordinator of health services or contained in department manuals. Nurses will attend all staff meetings and workshops as appropriate.   It is the nurse’s responsibility to supervise the school clinic establishing safe clinic procedures ensuring compliance with policies, protocols, and other instructions provided by coordinator of health services or contained in department manuals. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members, school personnel, parents, students and outside agencies. Works with principal, support staff, teachers, and parents to improve health services. Assist school personnel with completion of incident/accident reports.   The nurse will provide nursing evaluation, planning, intervention, management and referral activities for students with acute/chronic health problems including initiating emergency procedures as indicated in emergent situations. In addition, provide health education supporting the promotion of wellness, maintenance of health, and prevention of illness. Monitor’s student health records, conditions, physicals and immunizations to assure that all students have met and are maintaining state and local school health requirements. Performs chart reviews for chronic illnesses, health conditions and other health-related documentation. Ensure school staff are notified promptly, and students are flagged in computer-based program appropriately. Supports, coordinates and facilitates health screenings of students per state mandated grades and/or guidance referral. Documents and refers failures with timely follow-up.    Collaborates with school staff regarding IEPs, 504, student services meetings as required and giving appropriate input on health needs of students. Provides consultation and training with school health staff, school employees, and other agencies regarding students’ needs as appropriate.   Documents all services provided to students in appropriate district provided format using acceptable nursing terminology on the appropriate School Board of Alachua County (SBAC) form(s) and/or computer program. Is responsible for the collection and maintenance of statistical data appropriate to support the objectives set forth in the School Health Plan and the completion of the School Health Report. Supports, coordinates and facilitates health screenings of students per state mandated grades and/or guidance referral. Documents and refers failures with timely follow-up.    Demonstrates initiative in performance of assigned responsibilities, potential problems or opportunities for improvement. Exhibits interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member. Follows attendance, punctuality, and proper dress rules. Maintains expertise in assigned area and manages time efficiently. Models and maintain high ethical standards. Participates successfully in the training programs offered to increase skills and proficiency related to assignments. Represents the district and agency in a positive and professional manner.   Employees are required to complete time sheet, work activity reports (EARs) if applicable, and mandatory trainings. Trainings may be deemed mandatory by Agency, Statute, Grant, Program, or County Administrator. Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency.  Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.   Performs other duties as assigned.   Responsible for securing the designated information sets for the purposes of protecting confidentiality, data integrity, and appropriate access, for all information, both confidential and public record, which is stored in hard copy or electronic format. Position requires ability to type 30 or better words a minute and interpret on a personal computer. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for this position: Knowledge of multiple computer systems such as HMS, Florida Shots, Word, EXCEL, Outlook, SBAC Web-based Program etc.

Requirements

  • Active Florida Registered Professional Nurse Licensure
  • 2-3 years of Clinical Experience
  • American Heart First Aid Certification
  • CPR Certifcation
  • May require lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • May require the transfer/assistance of a student in a wheelchair to attend to personal needs etc.
  • Use of proper body mechanics are required and expected.
  • Mobility expected to be able to transverse large school campus for emergencies and services on campus other than school’s clinic.
  • 75% - 100% hearing and eyesight required.
