About The Position

The OPS Biological Scientist I position is a professional, full-time (40 hr/week) position within the DOH-Hillsborough Epidemiology Program. This position supports the Florida Department of Health-Hillsborough County in data analysis, data visualization, mapping, and generating reports for a variety of programs including but not limited to STI, HIV, TB, Environmental Health, and WIC. This position requires the ability to work independently and as a team member with minimal supervision. The incumbent conducts special projects, epidemiologic studies, research projects, and supports administrative and management activities. In-depth knowledge of principles and methods of research design, epidemiology, computer skills and knowledge of collection and analysis of statistical data is needed. The incumbent will conduct analyses of performance metrics, evaluate program outcomes, and produce actionable insights for program improvement across the Department. Conducts and/or attends health related meetings, staff meetings, committees, and workgroups. Assists with outreach activities, presentations, health fairs, and other community activities as needed.

Requirements

  • Understanding of confidentiality/HIPAA.
  • Skills in extracting and preparing data and information into logical format for presentation in reports, documents, and other written materials that suit the needs of a variety of users.
  • Ability to communicate with multiple divisions and programs within the Florida Department of Health-Hillsborough as well as communicating with colleagues at the state level as needed.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours to include after normal working hours and on weekends.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, or health informatics.
  • Experience working with healthcare or public health data, including electronic health records (EHR), clinical registries, or surveillance systems.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, statistical analysis and data visualizations software tools including but not limited to GIS, R, SAS, Python, Power BI, Tableau, or similar business intelligence platforms.
  • Demonstrable ability to translate project requirements into analytical plans and communicate technical findings to non‑technical audiences.
