About The Position

This is a full-time Other Personal Services (OPS) position with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Florida Forest Service. The role involves the identification, treatment, and monitoring of exotic plant species, requiring the safe handling and use of herbicides. The technician will be responsible for operating 4x4 vehicles, UTVs, and small utility trailers within the forest, as well as using GPS units, data logs, and paper maps for navigation and locating exotic plant species. Additionally, the position includes assisting with the maintenance and cleaning of assigned vehicles and equipment, and may involve supporting other forestry operations such as timber marking, forest maintenance, and plant and wildlife surveys. This is primarily a field position that requires working in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain, and understanding the risks associated with working in natural areas, including flora, fauna, and terrain, often with little or no assistance.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Possession of a valid class E driver license
  • Occasional to moderate travel required
  • Ability to respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed
  • Ability to work during inclement weather including heat, cold and rain
  • Ability to work in a forested environment with little or no assistance from others
  • Understand the risks associated with working in natural areas, including flora, fauna and terrain

Responsibilities

  • Exotic plant species identification, treatment and monitoring
  • Safely handle and use herbicides to control exotic plant species
  • Operate 4x4 vehicles, UTVs and small utility trailers within the forest
  • Use GPS units, data logs, and paper maps to help locate exotic plant species and to navigate through the forest
  • Assist with maintenance and cleaning of vehicles and equipment assigned to the job
  • Assist in other forestry operations, such as timber marking, forest maintenance, plant and wildlife surveys
