About The Position

The Ophthalmic Assistant provides ophthalmic support services by assisting eye care providers with patient intake, diagnostic testing, procedures, and patient education in an outpatient setting. This role performs routine ophthalmic testing, including visual acuity and intraocular pressure measurements, prepares patients and examination rooms, and documents clinical findings accurately in the electronic medical record. Working closely with providers and clinic team members, the Ophthalmic Assistant helps maintain efficient clinic flow, clear communication, and a positive patient experience. This position functions within a collaborative, supportive care environment and supports quality, safety, and service standards for ophthalmic care in alignment with Trinity Health expectations.

Requirements

• Must begin home study course in first year to work towards JCAHPO COA level certification
• Obtain CPR Certification within 90 days of hire (training provided by Trinity for certification)
• No experience required. On the job training provided
• Previous experience using computerized system for data reporting, information storage and retrieval required
• Excellent communication skills required
• Detail oriented
• The ability to maintain active patient/doctor communication during working shifts, up to eight hours per day
• The ability to access, input, and retrieve information from the computer system
• The Ophthalmic Assistant requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods (typically 6–8 hours per shift) in a clinic environment; perform frequent bending, reaching, and assisting with patient mobility; and use fine motor skills for clinical tasks and electronic documentation.
• Team members may need to lift, push, or pull up to 35 pounds and assist with heavier loads as part of a team when supporting patient transfers or moving equipment.
• Adequate vision, hearing, and communication abilities are essential for safe patient care and effective teamwork.
• Work is performed in outpatient clinic and clinical support areas with potential exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, chemicals, and cleaning agents.
• The role involves working in exam rooms, procedure areas, and hightraffic patient care spaces, following infection prevention and safety protocols.
• Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
• Schedules may include occasional extended hours based on clinic and patient needs.

Responsibilities

• Prepare patients for ophthalmology exams by obtaining histories, checking vision, and performing basic diagnostic tests as trained.
• Assist providers during eye exams and procedures by setting up equipment, administering eye drops, and supporting patient positioning.
• Document clinical information accurately in the electronic record, including test results and patient education.
• Maintain exam rooms and equipment, ensuring cleanliness, organization, and readiness for use.
• Educate patients about eye medications, followup visits, and diagnostic testing instructions.
• Participate in ongoing training and quality activities to support safe, highquality ophthalmic care.
