Requirements

• High School diploma or its educational equivalent; and
• One (1) year of relevant clinical ophthalmology experience performing tasks, as described in Level I above; or
• Holds a valid Certificate as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) issued by the International Joint Commission on allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO).
• Facility training and competency assessment necessary prior to performance of these tasks.

Responsibilities

• Initial intake to obtain medical, ocular and family history information, including chief complaint(s), past and present illness(es) or health problems, allergies and sensitivities, and medications.
• Reviews patients' histories and accurately documents information in the electronic medical record, following established guidelines for documentation and reporting.
• Performs preliminary screening examinations and diagnostic testing, such as spectacle measuring, various specialized testing such as acuity, visual field, or color vision testing, ophthalmic imaging, using appropriate ophthalmic devices and methodologies, as directed.
• Educates patients on proper preparation for eye-related testing and procedures, and proper eye care.
• Prepares and maintains examination rooms; prepares patients for examination by obtaining vital signs, assists providers during examinations, as directed; and maintains office antisepsis.
• Safely operates, calibrates, and inspects all job-related equipment; maintains cleanliness and order of equipment and supplies; assists with monitoring and inventory of equipment, stock, and supplies; and reports defective or damaged materials, equipment, and/or supplies to the area administrator.
• Administers mydriatic, cycloplegic and anesthetic eye drops under the supervision of a licensed physician/optometrist in accordance with the standards and requirements of the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions.
• Assists physicians and Nurses as directed; performs other related work, as assigned.
