Schedule: 12-hour switching shifts per day, starting at 6:00 AM and ending at 6:00 PM- Rotating schedule, this site operates 7 days a week Pay: $18.00 – $20.00 per hour, based on experience Start Date: October 2025 Who We Are Railserve is a leading provider of in-plant rail switching, transloading, and material handling services — operating at over 75 locations in North America. We use our own locomotives and employees to safely move railcars within industrial, manufacturing, and production plants. Beyond railcar switching, we also provide services including railcar loading/unloading, track maintenance, inspection, and repair. Railserve is a Marmon Group company, part of Berkshire Hathaway, one of the world’s largest and most respected organizations. The Role This position is responsible for operating locomotives; interpreting train orders, signals, and rules; transporting freight; and ensuring timely, correct switching and placement of railcars.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Dependable, punctual, and reliable transportation required.
  • Strong communication and active listening skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Works well as part of a team.
  • Frequent standing and walking; occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, or crawling.
  • Ability to lift and/or move heavy weights.
  • Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Moderate to heavy physical effort, including climbing railcars and using hand/power tools.
  • Must follow all prescribed safety rules.

Nice To Haves

  • Military experience helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect locomotives before operating.
  • Operate throttle and airbrakes in response to signals.
  • Interpret train orders, signals, and rules to operate safely and on schedule.
  • Assist crew leader with training new employees.
  • Observe track conditions for obstructions.
  • Prepare reports for accidents, stops, or delays.
  • Lubricate moving parts of the locomotive.
  • Handle train equipment safely (brakes, switches, derails, gates).
  • Control movement of equipment by radio, hand, or lantern signals.
  • Apply and release hand brakes.
  • Handle air hoses, wheel chocks, and coupling/uncoupling of railcars.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
