Brief Role DescriptionThe Ops Design Manager leads Electrify America’s Engineering & Architecture (EA) design team through the full design lifecycle—from site plan creation to construction drawing reviews and design standard development. This role drives innovation in design methodologies, seeking opportunities to reduce costs, improve quality control, shorten schedules, and improve constructability. The Ops Design Manager is also responsible for establishing and managing monthly and quarterly design KPIs across Design-Build (DB) Partners and the EA Construction team. They ensure design progress aligns with permitting timelines and that all internal and external stakeholders remain coordinated and accountable. This role requires strong leadership, a deep technical understanding site planning, architectural and civil design principles, and the ability to connect design, construction, and development teams within a fast-paced national deployment environment. The Ops Design Manager will oversee a team of designers, supporting their technical growth and development. The Ops Design Manager is expected to have AutoCAD Civil 3D expertise, develop drafting standards, and AutoCAD custom tools to deepen the organization and efficiency of the design team. To maintain Electrify America’s construction innovation edge, the Design Manager is expected to stay continuous apprised of emerging construction technologies, attending industry conferences as needed, to pilot new standards. The Ops Design Manager is expected to have a working knowledge of construction estimation, and work in parallel with internal Estimator to accurately predict how design standards inform overall project site development costs.

Requirements

  • Minimum 7 to 10+ years of experience in site planning, civil design, construction document development, or related fields.
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, related engineering, or related technical field

  • Experience reviewing construction drawings and technical design packages
  • Understanding of development entitlements and permitting workflows
  • Ability to analyze and improve design standards, templates, and processes
  • Strong understanding of architectural/engineering design sequences
  • Ability to develop and interpret construction cost estimates
  • Ability to lead and mentor design teams
  • Demonstrated ability to manage KPIs, track performance, and present findings
  • Experience coordinating between design, development, and construction groups
  • Experience working with design-build partners or large national rollout programs

Responsibilities

  • Lead the EA design team through site planning, layout development, and design package progression
  • Create, update, and enforce design standards, quality control checklists, templates, and technical guidelines
  • Conduct detailed reviews of construction drawings to ensure compliance, constructability, and adherence to specified budget(s)
  • Develop and maintain a library of best practices and value-engineering opportunities
  • Coach and mentor designers to ensure high-quality, consistent output
  • Identify design innovations that improve cost efficiency, accelerate permitting, or optimize construction delivery
  • Implement tools, workflows, and systems that streamline design operations
  • Partner with DB firms and contractors to pilot new methods and incorporate lessons learned
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across the design lifecycle
  • Travel to Industry Events, EV charging sites, and onsite trainings to grow and share industry knowledge
  • Establish, track, and report monthly/quarterly design KPIs for both DB Partners and the EA construction team
  • Review schedule health, design throughput, and permitting readiness
  • Provide KPI dashboards and executive summaries to leadership
  • Coordinate cross-functionally with Site Development, Construction, and PMO to ensure seamless handoffs and timely progress
  • Proactively identify risks or delays and develop mitigation plans
