The Operating Room Nurse Clinician III is a competent clinician possessing the knowledge and skill to meet standards for professional nursing practice as specified in the Texas Nurse Practice Act. This role requires an experienced, knowledgeable, and skilled individual in their specialty area, capable of functioning competently as a member of the interdisciplinary team. Experienced nurses transferring into the operating room must satisfactorily complete the operating room specific Competency Based Orientation (CBO) tool within a 6-month probationary period. The practice is characterized by predominantly interdependent and independent critical thinking decisions, focusing on problem-solving and patient-centered care. Key responsibilities include providing safe and competent intraoperative patient care, actively acquiring knowledge and skills specific to surgical procedures, and maintaining a strong patient advocacy role through diligent preoperative document review and critical safety checks. The Clinician III will safely circulate in emergent and urgent surgical cases, collaborate with the surgical team during time-outs and debriefings, and enforce aseptic and sterile techniques. They must effectively and safely operate highly specialized OR equipment, manage unexpected or emergency situations common to their assigned specialty population, and serve as a resource for Nurse Clinician I or II. The role involves managing common contingency situations on the clinical unit and providing patient care based on American Nurses Association Standards of Practice, Nursing Process, and UTMB’s three domains for competency and advancement: Professional Practice, Professional Performance, and Performance Improvement.
