About The Position

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by performing a variety of technical duties for the intravenous admixture program by preparing intravenous medications, including but not limited to, chemotherapeutic preparations. The Hall Perrine Cancer Center Pharmacy Technician assists the pharmacist in preparing and distributing prescription medications, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. The pharmacy technician works only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.

Requirements

  • Ability to operate basic computer applications.
  • Ability to calculate dilution and dosing problems.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners as a Certified Pharmacy Technician or Technician Trainee prior to the first day of employment required.
  • Nationally Certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PCTB) or by the NHA, required.

Nice To Haves

  • Twelve months of hospital pharmacy (with experience in preparing intravenous medications and chemotherapeutic medications) or retail pharmacy, preferred.
  • Pharmacy Technician Diploma, preferred.
  • Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS), Bachelor of Arts (BA), or Bachelor of Science (BS), preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a working knowledge of pharmacy terminology, pharmacology, and pharmacotherapy.
  • Carries out basic calculations required for the preparation of compounded medications.
  • Maintains a sterile environment within all ISO 5 environments. Documents cleaning per policy.
  • Prepares all compounded sterile products according to recipes, policies and procedures, and in compliance with.
  • Properly disposes of all materials used in the preparation of compound sterile products.
  • Appropriately triages phone calls and takes detailed phone messages.
  • Accurately interprets, enters, and prepares prescriptions.
  • Processes controlled substance medications and paperwork in a precise manner.
  • Receives, un-packs, sorts, and restocks pharmaceuticals and supplies into their appropriate locations.
  • Accurately performs opening and closing the pharmacy, operating the cash register, entering patient insurance information into the computer, and performing on-line prescription adjudication.
  • Routinely checks pharmaceutical expiration dates and replaces outdated and unusable medications.
  • Performs the essential functions relating to drug purchasing and inventory control.
  • Maintains patient assistance program paperwork and documentation.
  • Maintains research accountability logs and inventory.
  • Assists in the training and orientation of new employees and students.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of and complies with pharmacy policy and standards of work and the laws, rules, and regulations that govern the distribution of medications.
  • Responsible for intra-departmental communication.
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a team inter- and intradepartmentally to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives. This includes working in different pharmacy department areas (e.g., HPCC, Inpatient, Employee Pharmacy) as necessary to meet patient care and business needs
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
