About The Position

MD Anderson Cancer Center is a global leader in the treatment of blood cancers. The Leukemia department is one of the most successful disease-specific cancer programs in the world, as well as one of the largest. Our program sees over 2,000 new patients and 50,000 outpatient encounters each year, while maintaining an inpatient census over 120 patients per day. We have a special Fast Track Clinic for leukemia outpatients, to take care of treatment needs that don't require hospitalization. We offer over 50 active clinical trials, many of these are not available in other cancer centers or the community, and many offer significant benefit over any therapy considered standard of care. The ideal candidate will be an experienced Advanced Practice Provider with acute care experience and inpatient experience. Prior Oncology and experience in procedures preferred. Requirements

  • Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.
  • Two years clinical experience as an advanced practice provider.
  • Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN or ACNP or ACNPC or ACAGNP or AGACNP or ACNPC-AG or AGACNP or AGNP or ACPNP or ANP or AGNP or AGPCNP or FNP or GNP or PNP or PMHNP or WHNP or APNP) or Physician Assistant. Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.

Nice To Haves

  • Acute care experience in inpatient setting.
  • Prior Oncology experience.
  • Prior procedure experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality patient care that is specifically tailored to the patient's diagnosis, treatment, age, developmental and other identified needs.
  • Obtain a medical history and perform a physical examination and psychosocial assessment.
  • Review and interpret physical exam findings, laboratory and/or radiographic test results and formulate a plan for further diagnosis and therapeutic management in collaboration with the attending physician.
  • Document all pertinent information within the patient's medical record per institutional policy.
  • Perform admission and discharge responsibilities.
  • Manage systems, toxicities and complications related to the patient's disease and/or treatment in collaboration with attending physician.
  • Order consultations, diagnostic tests or procedures as indicated.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing with Physicians, multi-disciplinary team members, and external care providers.
  • Facilitate communication between patient/family, primary and/or multi-disciplinary team.
  • Provide education to patients and their families.
  • Participate in the conduct of clinical research.
  • Assist with eligibility assessments.
  • Monitor for side effects of toxicities associated with investigational treatments, and document according to protocol requirements.
  • Perform bone marrow aspiration/biopsy procedures.
  • Perform lumbar punctures and Ommaya taps with or without administration or intrathecal chemotherapy.
  • Maintain privileging once obtained.
  • Other duties as assigned.
