About The Position

As an Archaeologist I, you will support a variety of cultural resource projects with a strong focus on work within Northern Idaho, Eastern Washington, and Western Montana. Ideal candidates must reside within the project areas outlined, though candidates from the broader region may still be considered.

Requirements

  • Has completed coursework leading to a degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field: Crew Member – minimum 2 years of college-level coursework and completion of a field school Crew Chief – bachelor’s degree, completion of a field school, and 1 year of professional experience Field Director – bachelor’s degree, completion of a field school, 2 years of professional experience, and is permitted or qualified for agency permitting based on the SOI Professional Qualification Standards
  • Proficient in prehistoric and/or historic archaeology in the designated region
  • Proficient in documenting archaeological sites and IOs/IFs in the designated region
  • Organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, dependable, and trustworthy
  • Excellent navigational skills (GPS and compass) and ability to navigate and drive 4WD vehicles
  • Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency using tablets (Apple iPad or Samsung Galaxy) to document cultural resources
  • Proficiency with sub-meter GPS receiver
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 applications (for phone or tablet)
  • Permitted or permittable on BLM lands in the designated region (Field Director or Principal Investigator)
  • Previous NHPA, NEPA, FERC, and/or other cultural or environmental trainings
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Ability to evaluate resources for NRHP-eligibility

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Crew Member, Crew Chief, or Field Director for the project
  • Conduct Class III (intensive pedestrian) cultural resources inventory
  • Document archaeological sites and IOs/IFs
  • Conduct probing or shovel testing
  • Use hand-held field technology (i.e. ArcGIS phone/tablet application paired with sub-meter GPS receivers)
  • Survey an average of 50 acres/8 miles per day and carry personal health and safety equipment (i.e. personal water, sunscreen, etc.)
  • Work in moderate weather conditions (fluctuating temperatures and inclement weather, including rain and snow)
  • Work independently and efficiently, while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings
  • Follow instruction and make adjustments when provided feedback
  • Support, actively participate, and act in accordance with Wright’s and Eocene Environmental Group's culture of safety and employee ownership
  • Comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations; maintains knowledge of and follows all company policies and procedures
