About The Position

This position serves as a Special Assistant to the General Counsel and performs functions that are necessary for the operation of the General Counsel Division, including scheduling and legal support. The Special Assistant performs a variety of complex administrative duties requiring a comprehensive knowledge of the agency’s regulations and procedures: emphasis is placed upon relieving the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel of operational details and drafting standard portions of rulings and proposed orders. The Special Assistant will also have primary responsibility for Office of General Counsel case management, including maintaining a list of cases, projects, and issues pending with General Counsel attorneys, and tracking deadlines and next steps. The Special Assistant will take on various support functions, drafting routing notices, drafting templates of Commission orders, and scheduling work, research, and information collection. The Special Assistant will also proofread legal documents for accuracy, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting errors, and verify that the documents adhere to the style guidelines of the Commission, including citation formats. The Special Assistant will also be responsible for filing legal documents, including through Maryland Electronic Courts (MDEC) and may engage in periodic legal research. The Special Assistant will also likely work on sensitive and confidential projects requiring discretion and judgment in the release of information, and act as the representative/liaison of the General Counsel’s office relative to other agencies, Technical Staff, and other Divisions.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Five years of administrative staff or professional work.
  • Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and one year of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for- year basis for the required experience.
  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
