About The Position

The Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA), under the supervision of a registered Occupational Therapist, assists in providing occupational therapy services. The OT Assistant assists in evaluations to determine patient’s daily living skills and capacities; helps plan and implement remedial tasks or activities for patients to meet treatment goals; trains and assists patients in developing skills, interests and lifestyles that develop self-sufficiency in overcoming disabilities and encourage independent functioning.

Requirements

  • One year experience in acute care, extended care, rehabilitation, mental health, or outpatient setting
  • Certification by the CA Board of Occupational Therapy as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA)
  • Current CPR recognition
  • Must function independently, have personal integrity, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with other personnel, clients, and support agencies
  • Sits, stands, bends, lifts, walks, and moves intermittently during working hours and ability to lift up to 20 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in providing developmental exercises, multiple sensory stimulation, and self-care activities.
  • Observes and reports patient response to treatment.
  • Prepares work materials and assists in maintaining treatment areas and equipment in satisfactory operating condition.
  • Maintains safe environment for patient.
  • Keeps progress notes and post-treatment data in records.
  • May perform clerical activities related to occupational therapy.
  • Help patients relearn and perform daily living tasks.
  • Assesses the patient’s environments and makes necessary adjustments if needed.
  • Advises on what equipment would suit the patient for their everyday activities and helps them utilize them.
  • Instructs and trains patients in therapeutic exercises.
  • Recommend special equipment, such as mobility aids and eating aids, and instruct patients and families on how to use the equipment.
  • Follows safe work practices, takes an active interest in preventing injury or illness and promoting a safe and healthful environment for self and others, and complies with Hospital and governmental safety regulations.
  • Promotes professional growth of self and co-workers by participating in on-the-job training, continuing education, and assisting with training of new employees.
  • Assumes personal responsibility to comply with all Federal, State and local laws governing business conduct, conducts business in an ethical and trustworthy manner, and displays the qualities and characteristics of a professional at all times when dealing with patients, visitors, physicians, volunteers, and fellow employees.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional customer service when working with the public, physicians, and other departments.
  • Strives for excellence in following policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes positive communication skills when interacting with people who work for, are serviced by, or associated with the hospital, to ensure that persons receive the highest degree of attention and courtesy.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information received in the department and throughout the hospital by complying with strict confidentiality regulations per HIPAA requirements.
