Job Description Summary: This position is responsible for assisting staff Occupational Therapists in accordance with the Ohio Occupational Therapy Board laws and rules. Following the set POC, the occupational therapist assistant provides patient treatment, patient/family instruction, discharge planning and may assist in the occupational therapy evaluation as appropriate. The OTA documents in the medical record and communicates with the multidisciplinary team. The OTA collaborates with the supervising occupational therapist including, but not limited to, the need for OT reassessment. This position helps patients achieve maximum functional outcomes. Acts as a clinical instructor for students and actively participates in department functions.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree (Required)
  • BLS - Basic Life Support - American Heart Association
  • DL-HC - Driver's License only if in a Home Care department - Department of Motor Vehicles
  • OTA - Occupational Therapist Assistant - American Occupational Therapy Assoc.
  • Experience in an acute or rehabilitation setting
  • Basic personal computer skills
  • Knowledge in assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of occupational therapy
  • BLS certification

Responsibilities

  • Driving is an essential function of the job.
  • Evaluates and treats patients after physician referral.
  • Administers portions of the assessment that is assigned by the Occupational Therapist (OT) in which Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) has demonstrated to be competent.
  • Assists in reassessment process, reporting patient performance to the OT.
  • Assists OT in implementation of the patients plan of care based on occupational performance frames of reference(s): bio-mechanical, rehabilitation, sensorimotor.
  • Attends multidisciplinary patient care meetings.
  • Plans and helps coordinate discharge plan with multidisciplinary team.
  • Educates patient and caregiver/family.
  • Recommends Medical Equipment required for discharge.
  • Provides information to Physicians, Nurses, Care Managers, Social Workers, and other team members.
  • Documents evaluation performance directed and interpreted by the OT, progress towards goals, discharge plan/continuity of care for the multidisciplinary team, and other involved medical and insurance parties. All documentation to be co-signed by the supervising OT.
  • Delegates assignments to Rehab Technicians.
  • Remains involved in department process improvements utilization review and quality assurance program.
  • Educates others about Occupational Therapy.
  • Takes active role in orienting new staff members.
  • Assists in clinical instruction of COTA students.
  • Educates other disciplines and medical/hospital personnel on OT purpose, goals and treatment policies/procedures.
  • Assumes other duties delegated by management.
  • As a High Reliability Organization (HRO), responsibilities require focus on safety, quality and efficiency in performing job duties.
