About The Position

We are a locally focused manufacturing & distribution team that values teamwork, craftsmanship and reliability. The Occupational and Food Safety Manager plays a key role in supporting these values by leading and continuously improving workplace safety across our warehouse, retail, and manufacturing operations in Alaska, with a broader feed/ food safety program across all Skagit Farmers operations. This position coordinates the organization’s safety and compliance efforts to protect employees, customers, and the business, while developing, implementing, and maintaining programs that ensure compliance with applicable workplace safety standards and food safety regulations across multiple locations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Food Science or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years’ experience managing safety programs.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA standards, incident investigation, hazard assessments, and safety training.
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational, multi-tasking, problem-solving, investigative & analytical skills.
  • Experience developing and implementing feed quality programs (e.g. Safe Food/Safe Feed, FAMI-QS, APHIS or HAACP).
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Office.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screen as a condition of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience ensuring operations adhere to the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)
  • Strong understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) including sanitation, housekeeping, employee hygiene, equipment cleanliness, ingredient handling, and contamination prevention
  • Familiarity with Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles and feed/food safety plans.
  • Experience with regulatory audits.
  • Recall and traceability experience, including lot tracking, mock recalls, recall documentation, and coordination across operations, suppliers, and customer teams.
  • Possess professional certifications such as CSP, ASP, CHST, OSHA 30, PCQI, or HACCP.
  • Understanding of feed labeling in accordance with American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).
  • Knowledge in animal feed manufacturing, feed regulations and labeling guidelines or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with others to reduce risk, improve safety culture, and promote safe work practices and safe food handling, including conducting regular teams meetings and onsite visits as required
  • Develop and manage occupational safety and food safety programs, policies and training. Monitoring activities, verification and validation steps in accordance with State, and Federal feed manufacturing guidelines regulated by USDA, FDA and State agencies.
  • Develop SOP’s for manufacturing processes and safety practices across the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, state safety rules, FDA/USDA guidelines, and local health regulations.
  • Conduct routine safety and food safety inspections, audits and risk assessments.
  • Lead case management efforts by investigating incidents, near losses, and food safety concerns, and supporting management in developing and implementing corrective actions.
  • Lead others with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), perform hazard analyses and establish preventative controls to protect food from physical, biological and chemical hazards.
  • Administer and manage workers’ compensation claims and return-to-work efforts.
  • Communicate recalls and ensure proper recordkeeping.
  • Participate in educational opportunities for professional development.
  • Exhibit an ability to receive feedback, adapt to new processes and continuously develop skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to collaborate, communicate well and effectively relay information with an emphasis on developing positive professional relationships.
  • Practice punctual and reliable attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
