About The Position

The Obstetrical Surgical Technician is a member of the Obstetrical healthcare team who provides technical support to the obstetrician/surgeon and registered nurse in the operating and delivery room settings. This position assists in the preparation of supplies and equipment for surgical and delivery procedures and provides the appropriate instrumentation necessary for the obstetrician/surgeon to perform these procedures. The OB Surgical Tech is responsible for maintaining current knowledge of trends in the operating room, including new products, procedures, and physicians' techniques. Provides assistance in the maintenance of aseptic cleaning of the Operating Room pre and post procedure and maintains a par level of supplies within the Family Birth Center. Performs indirect and direct patient care of the neonate, and female patients under the direct supervision of a RN. Provides patient care support, maintenance of nursing unit, housekeeping and dietary tasks, and clerical support for the nursing unit. Communication : Collaborates with the leadership team and UCIC to identify and resolve unit issues. Keeps co-workers and intra-op staff informed of any updates/issues. Follows written instructions as needed. Quality : Complies with established departmental and organization policies/guidelines. Maintains, operates, and monitors all equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and department standards. Technical Competency : Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to the age of the patients served. Collects, organizes, and enters information into the patient scheduling application. Assists with various types of surgical operations providing technically skilled duties, serving as first assist. Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique. The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Current Surgical Tech Certification required, or if employed prior to July 1, 2021, registration with the Virginia Board of Medicine required.
  • Ability to create and maintain a sterile field.
  • Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure materials.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology.
  • Computer skills.
  • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 100 lbs. occasionally.
  • For any weight over 35 lbs. use Safe Handling Equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate of an approved Operating Room Technician program preferred.
  • 3 years of Surgical Scrub Tech experience preferred.
