About The Position

National Weather Center (NWC) Senior Security Officer Serves in an Assistant Director (or first-line) supervisor capacity as an unarmed noncommissioned public servant. Provides direct supervision and performs as a senior unarmed, noncommissioned public servant in the areas of security, information dissemination and related security and non-criminal law enforcement. Serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) by fulfilling training and reporting obligations related to campus safety protocols.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED, AND : 6 months of security or public safety experience.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing as needed.
  • Ability to speak clear and concise English.
  • Read and understand basic written materials.
  • Basic math skills, basic computer skills.
  • Ability to produce reports and complete work within deadlines.
  • Ability to supervise staff and communicate directions and expectations effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail in order to detect irregularities and changes in environment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including overnights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to give clear and concise answers to questions and give detailed directions.
  • Ability to calmly and professionally handle situations.
  • Ability to walk, climb stairs and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Uses established safety practices to protect health and safety of personnel and property.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous OU or OUPD security experience
  • CPR and first aid certifications
  • Must be able to pass police and US Dept of Commerce background investigation.
  • Valid Oklahoma Driver's License or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire date.
  • Must be able to lift at least 62 pounds weight from the floor.
  • Must be able to push a maximum force of 120 pounds.
  • Must be able to pull a maximum force of 125 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Provide active shift supervision for security personnel to ensure they are executing their duties on a daily basis, including the scheduling of personnel for shift coverage, monitoring staffing levels, and address safety-related issues which may arise while on shift.
  • Conducts performance evaluations, coaching and positive discipline meetings. Standard shift for this position would be 8 hours, 5 days a week, and includes some weekends, holidays, and all home football game days.
  • Provide on-the-job training of NWC Security guards in all duties; monitoring assigned shift personnel for adherence to policy/procedure, tardiness, appearance, grooming and work completion.
  • Routine testing/quizzing and remedial training, if needed, of guards on the operation/use of the X-Ray machine, and other job related skill sets.
  • Reviewing daily/weekly/monthly equipment checklists (Emergency phone system [EPS] checks, Emergency Broadcast system [EBS] checks, Phone paging system checks, defibrillator checks, radio checks, among others).
  • Enforces appropriate university rules, city ordinances, state and federal laws. Responds to complaints or summons a commissioned Police Officer as appropriate.
  • Making contact with members of the public, staff, faculty of the University, members of NOAA/NSSL, and/or students to explain regulations and/or enforcement actions taken, or to determine the party’s need for information, service, or assistance; referring inquiries to the appropriate resources for resolution.
  • Operating public safety communications equipment including but not limited to conventional and cellular telephones, two-way portable radios, hand-held computers, video monitoring systems, and computer workstations.
  • Identifying and reporting via prescribed channels various types of “hazards” to enable corrective action to be initiated.
  • Monitoring deliveries and shipments at loading dock; scanning all incoming mail/packages when necessary
  • Conducting periodic rounds of the NWC building, parking lots, and associated grounds.
  • Assisting with hiring and interview process for NWC Security positions.
  • Assist with the writing of training manuals, policy, and performance evaluations.
  • Creates and implements emergency procedures, drills and training for security staff.
  • Assigns duties, positions and special requirements for shift and events.
  • Provides input for staffing and facility planning.
  • Conducts opening and closing protocols, including arming and disarming security systems.
  • Tracks, records, and maintains an accurate account of all incidents regarding non-criminal and or minor criminal matters.
  • Performing various duties as needed or assigned to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
