About The Position

Capital Area Community Services, Inc. is hiring a Nutrition Coordinator for our Head Start Program in Lansing, MI. This is a full-time position, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year. Starting pay is $36.74 Benefits include generous paid time off, sick time, and a full benefits package. Job Summary: Plans, directs, oversees, and coordinates nutrition services in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards, Child Care Food Program, and Michigan Child Care Licensing Rules; Provides training, support, consultation, and technical assistance to staff and parents related to child nutrition, food safety, food handling, meal service, and special dietary needs; S upervises assigned staff; Develops policies and procedures for food and nutrition services.

Requirements

  • Registered Dietitian/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist
  • Must undergo and satisfactorily pass at the time of hire and periodically thereafter pursuant to federal and state laws, Head Start Performance Standards, and Agency Policy and Procedures: Criminal History Search (including finger-printing) Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry Clearance Physical examination, Tuberculosis (TB) test and drug screen
  • Must possess the ability to: Keep current on professional licenses and certifications. Work on multiple tasks and be able to organize and prioritize tasks efficiently. Properly stoop, bend, lift, climb stairs, and expend moderate physical exertion.
  • Work at Head Start centers within Ingham, Clinton, Eaton, and Shiawassee Counties

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred knowledge/experience in early childhood nutrition
  • Preferred knowledge/experience in food safety/sanitation (or ServSafe certified)
  • Preferred knowledge/experience in the CACFP (Child Care Food Program)
  • Preferred knowledge/experience in working with diverse low-income families.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, oversees, and coordinates nutrition services in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards, Child Care Food Program, and Michigan Child Care Licensing Rules
  • Provides training, support, consultation, and technical assistance to staff and parents related to child nutrition, food safety, food handling, meal service, and special dietary needs

  • Develop and implement in-service workshops and training for staff and parents.
  • Meet periodically with the Health Services Manager to provide operational data, share observations and concerns, and evaluate the progress of the program and component.
  • Work closely with other program supervisors to communicate the objectives and plans of the Nutrition component and agree on methods and procedures for integrating activities.
  • Communicate regularly with supervisor regarding any changes in work schedule, supply and equipment needs, or any issues or concerns.
  • Participate in meetings to provide input regarding special concerns about specific children or families and to assist in developing plans to meet those needs.
  • Follow administrative and supervisory directives, verbal or written.
  • Directs and coordinates food and nutrition services for CACS Head Start.
  • Establishes and maintains vended meals contracts.
  • Coordinates compliance with provisions of annual CACFP agreement and triennial reviews.
  • Provides staff training in nutrition, CACFP, food safety/sanitation, and early childhood feeding.
  • Plans monthly breakfast and snack menus that comply with CACFP requirements and Head Start Performance Standards and writes accompanying purchase orders.
  • Visits classrooms two-three times per year to conduct: CACFP monitoring reviews. Nutrition monitoring reviews Height/weight screening on children with nutritionally 'at risk' BMI.
  • Consults with families who have nutritional concerns regarding their child's growth, eating habits, food allergies, or other special dietary needs.
  • Follows-up with parents and health care providers to address nutrition-related health concerns that have been identified.
  • Supervises the Nutrition Services Aide, Nutritionist, and EHS-CCP Nutritionist, ensuring responsibilities are carried out efficiently, competently, and professionally.
  • Writes nutrition policies and procedures for the Program Manual.
  • Provides nutrition article for the monthly Parent Connections newsletter.
  • Posts monthly menus/recipes and other helpful food and nutrition resources on agency website.
  • Seeks to expand and enrich nutrition education resources for use in classrooms.
  • Monitors food expenditures to help identify problem areas.
  • Prepares and submits required reports and records related to the CACFP and Head Start.
  • Writes the CACS Head Start Nutrition Plan.
  • Utilizes agency database to maintain documentation related to individual children's nutrition status/plans.
  • Assist with other duties as defined and/or requested by an Administrator or Supervisor when additional work is necessary to fulfill the obligations of the program.
