About The Position

Daniel Stowe Conservancy (Stowe) inspires a love of nature and its beauty through unforgettable outdoor experiences. The nearly 400 acres of Stowe provides visitors with a chance to reconnect with nature in all seasons. The property welcomes guests to spectacular gardens, a conservatory dedicated to the display of tropical plants, sparkling fountains, 8 miles of trails, a dog park, and 3 distinct retail locations. The Nursery Horticulturist is responsible for the operations of the greenhouses and Growing Center nursery under the supervision of the Conservatory and Nursery Manager. In this role, the Horticulturist will assist with plant care, greenhouse propagation, develop a volunteer propagation program, and retail fulfillment with in-house plants. An ideal candidate will have a background in nursery propagation, great time management skills and good interpersonal skills to work with both internal and external departments, and the ability to work both inside and outside during the year.

Requirements

  • Exhibits a passion for the mission of Daniel Stowe Conservancy.
  • Successfully pass a standard criminal background review.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be willing to wear a uniform and work outside as needed.
  • Required to work weekends, some evenings, and federal holidays.
  • Must be willing to serve all guests equally regardless of their race, color, religion, national origin, age, gender, marital status, disability, veteran status, genetic information, gender identity and/or sexual orientation.
  • Must be able to perform physical requirements of programs at the most rigorous level.
  • May experience exposure to extended periods of sun, rain, cold temperatures, wind, water and potentially uneven terrain that may contain trip hazards.
  • Must be able to hear distress noises and hear and see distress signals in a variety of environments, always keeping safety in mind.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Regular walking, lifting, twisting, crawling, pushing and pulling, grasping
  • Frequent sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling
  • The role may require working in varying environments, including outdoor and indoor settings, and may involve exposure to hazardous materials or conditions.
  • High school diploma and 3 years of nursery propagation; relevant experience in temperature hardiness zones preferred.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Well-rounded knowledge and experience understanding, maintaining, and working with a wide variety of plant species.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with a diverse audience.

  • Bachelor's degree preferred in Horticulture or related field of study.

Responsibilities

  • Understands the importance of each guest to Stowe and drives excellence to ensure an optimal experience in every way.
  • Helps lead the development of nursery propagation to achieve revenue goals through retail sales.
  • Cares for all indoor display plants within the Garden Pavilion, Trailhead and Farmhouse.
  • Maintains all plants for sale within all retail spaces indoors and outdoors.
  • Coordinates with the Director of Retail Operations to stock plants for sale and those for decoration within Retail.
  • Collaborates with the Ecological Stewardship Manager to support the native plant seed propagation program.
  • Assists with the development of a volunteer propagation program and oversee its implementation.
  • Exemplifies Stowe’s Mission Statement and supports staff, departments and leadership in pursuing and achieving goals.
  • Performs any other duties needed to help drive to our vision, fulfill our mission, and abide by our values.
