About The Position

MU Health Care is seeking a dedicated individual to make a meaningful impact on patient care as a Nurse Tech. This role involves providing support and comfort to patients, ensuring seamless patient transfers, meal deliveries, and feeding assistance. The Nurse Tech will utilize exceptional organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and maintain an orderly and efficient environment. A pivotal aspect of the role is training and educating new staff members, fostering a culture of continuous learning. The position involves assisting patients with daily tasks, performing essential medical checks, and responding promptly to patient needs, serving as the heart of a patient-centered approach. The Adult Overflow Unit is a dynamic 10-bed unit focused on treating floor status patients transferred from the ICU, surgery, and the Emergency Department. Common diagnoses include shortness of breath, COPD, AFIB, weakness, post-surgical recovery, and comfort care, offering a unique opportunity to gain experience with a varied patient population. The unit is staffed by a collaborative team of two nurses, one nurse tech, and a Core Charge nurse who also supports the Medical Bridge unit, providing an ideal environment for learning and professional growth.

Requirements

  • Is enrolled in a professional or practical nursing education program and has or will complete a Fundamentals of Nursing course within 90 days
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) exam registration
  • Proof of certification as a Patient Care Technician (PCT)
  • Direct patient care experience in the past three (3) years as a medical assistant, nursing assistant, emergency medical technician, or surgical technician
  • Completion within the last three (3) years, or will complete within 180 days, an Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) training program and clinical log demonstrating 100 hours of patient care experience
  • Nursing licensure candidate who was unsuccessful on the state licensure examinations in the past three (3) years
  • Completion a nursing program outside the United States and is awaiting the licensure examination in this country

Responsibilities

  • Assist nursing staff and ancillary staff in transferring patients from bed to bed, stretcher, or wheelchair.
  • Pickup and delivery of patient meal trays, and assisting with patient feeding as directed.
  • Organize workload and manage multiple tasks while maintaining a clutter-free and orderly environment.
  • Promptly answer unit telephones and accurately deliver messages and information to patients, families, visitors, staff, and personnel upon request.
  • Educate and train new staff members in the responsibilities of the Care Team Associate role.
  • Perform other duties as delegated by nursing staff and unit management as needed in both routine and emergent situations.
  • Perform patient position changes, placement and removal of patient equipment, daily hygiene care, simple non-sterile dressing changes, and finger stick glucose checks.
  • May perform venipuncture to obtain a blood sample.
  • Maintain quality control checks.
  • Deliver and retrieve lab specimens and supplies as requested.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely entry of information into the bed-management system.
  • Responsible for prompt response to patient call lights and addressing patient needs using positive guest relations skills.
  • Ensure patient vital signs, intake, output, height, and weight are obtained and documented as directed.
  • May complete unit/department specific duties as outlined in department documents.
