Howard University Hospital is seeking a dynamic and experienced Nurse Residency Program Manager to lead and elevate our Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program (NRP). Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
  • 5 years of acute care nursing experience required, including 3 years in nursing education, professional development, or nursing preceptorship
  • Current, active DC RN license required
  • Advanced knowledge of acute care patient care delivery and demonstrated expertise in nursing professional development practice
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder engagement skills; ability to influence at all levels of the organization including executive leadership
  • Data literacy and outcomes analysis skills; ability to interpret benchmarking results and quality indicators to drive program decisions
  • Knowledge of Vizient/AACN NRP program structure, benchmarking systems, and evidence-based curriculum frameworks
  • Skilled in adult learning principles, evidence-based curriculum design, and clinical facilitation methods
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams); experience with LMS platforms and residency tracking systems preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Nursing, Nursing Education, or related field preferred
  • Experience with nurse residency programs, Vizient/AACN NRP coordination, professional practice initiatives, or workforce transition programs strongly preferred
  • Minimum 1 year of supervisory or program management experience preferred
  • Nursing Professional Development board certification (NPD-BC) preferred
  • Additional certification in a nursing specialty or nursing leadership strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and manage all aspects of the Nurse Residency Program, including curriculum development aligned with AACN Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education, scheduling, and evaluation processes; ensure the program meets organizational goals, regulatory requirements, and national residency program standards
  • Serve as the organizational lead for the Vizient/AACN NRP — coordinating benchmarking submissions, reviewing comparative data against national NRP cohorts, and translating results into curriculum adjustments and program improvements
  • Collaborate with nurse managers, preceptors, and educators to support resident onboarding and orientation; partner with nursing leadership to align residency activities with professional practice priorities, workforce needs, and retention strategies
  • Coach and support residents through their development journey — fostering a psychologically safe, inclusive learning environment that addresses transition stress, resilience, and professional identity formation; oversee monthly clinical reflection time facilitation
  • Develop and facilitate monthly cohort-based learning seminars aligned with the Vizient/AACN NRP curriculum; oversee Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) project mentorship from project selection through final presentation
  • Meet regularly with residents, managers, and preceptors to assess individual progression in the RN role; identify trends, risks, and opportunities and escalate concerns appropriately
  • Monitor, analyze, and report program outcomes including retention rates, completion rates, resident satisfaction, and transition-to-practice indicators; prepare dashboards and formal recommendations for nursing and executive leadership
  • Oversee resident participation in quality improvement initiatives, including DMAIC or equivalent projects, in alignment with organizational priorities
  • Represent HUH at the State-wide Nurse Residency Consortium; maintain awareness of national nurse residency trends, standards, and best practices to inform ongoing program evolution
  • Plan and coordinate residency-related events, including pinning ceremonies and graduation activities
