About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) in Orthopaedics practices collaboratively with Orthopaedic providers to deliver comprehensive care to orthopedic patients in our Adult and Pediatric Level 2 Trauma Center. The positions area of responsibility is in the hospital and/or office clinic setting working independently. This position integrates sound communication and clinical skills, as well as superior leadership and decision-making abilities to provide direct patient care to a variety of orthopaedic patients across the continuum, including initial assessment and fracture stabilization, inpatient care, and discharge planning. The Nurse Practitioner demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant HealthCare and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation. The provider functions in a supervised and independent capacity with the Covenant HealthCare physician team.

Requirements

  • Masters or Doctorate degree in Nursing (MSN, DNP) with an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) certification.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in the State of Michigan and Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Michigan license and AANP or ANCC board certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Continuing medical education as required by certification body.
  • Two (2) years experience as a Nurse Practitioner in orthopaedics or previous experience within orthopaedics preferred. However, were open to candidates without prior orthopaedic experience who demonstrate a strong drive and a willingness to learn with on-the-job training which includes an extended orientation.
  • Strong clinical assessment, leadership, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication, leadership and interpersonal abilities with the ability to work in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.
  • Collaborative practice agreement with an Orthopaedic Surgeon.
  • Must be able to interact and appropriately manage patients and families in the following categories: Orthopaedic patients of all ages.
  • Knowledge in the specialty of the practice for which the position is posted is preferred.
  • Knowledge of acute and chronic care protocols, administration of medications and treatments, delivery of care and documentation of care.
  • Knowledge of medical practices, terminology, billing and reimbursement.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Computer literacy and be able to work with an EMR system while providing patient care.
  • Analytical skills to plan, develop, and administer care to a wide variety of patients.
  • Ability to assess and treat patients with limited history and background in a timely manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Respond calmly and effectively in emergencies.
  • Make decisions within training and practice scope.
  • Ability to maintain punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
  • Fast-paced hospital setting, typically within in the acute care setting including emergency department.
  • Occasional carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, handling, feeling, and depth.
  • Frequent standing, walking, twisting, reaching.
  • Constant talking, hearing, near vision, midrange vision and far vision, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.
  • Frequent lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Occasional lifting up to 100 or more lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) preferred or must obtain within 12 months of hire/transfer date.

Responsibilities

  • Provide age appropriate, comprehensive assessment and management of orthopaedic patients across the spectrum for pediatric patients (infants, children, and adolescents); adult patients; and geriatric patients.
  • Utilize excellent assessment and clinical skills to provide initial management of patients with acute orthopaedic injuries, including initial orthopaedic consultation, assessment and stabilization such as fracture reduction, splint or cast application and wound management.
  • Utilize strong clinical and decision-making skills in a fast-paced work environment to provide direct patient care to orthopaedic patients in the acute care setting, including preoperative and postoperative assessment and management.
  • Collaborate in the development, management, and evaluation of the multidisciplinary plan of care, including proficiency in understanding, ordering and interpreting appropriate therapies such as imaging, labs, procedures and medications.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using the EMR to communicate patients plan of care through accurate documentation including detailed H&P and consult notes, detailed progress notes, discharge summary and patient discharge instructions.
  • Demonstrate excellent understanding of the injury process and treatment regimens associated within the orthopaedic patient population.
  • May involve on-call responsibilities and varying shifts.
  • Remains up to date on best practice standards for the orthopedic patient by continually seeking out educational opportunities to learn and broaden their orthopedic knowledge base to provide evidence-based care. Maintains professional development through seminars, workshops, in-services, and current professional literature.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
