A Nurse Practitioner under the supervision of a physician performs a variety of medical care services for patients in a City agency health program. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in a health facility where working conditions are normal. Work requires minimal physical exertion.

Requirements

  • Licensure as a registered nurse in Maryland or registered nurse licensure in a Multi-State Compact participant state is required at time of appointment.
  • Candidate must be either certified as a nurse practitioner or nurse midwife OR be a nurse practitioner or nurse midwife graduate prior to certification who has presented evidence of completion of an approved nurse practitioner or nurse midwifery program and presented evidence of the acceptance by a national certifying body of an application for a national certifying examination that is approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing.
  • NOTE: Nurse practitioner or nurse midwife who are hired as graduates will be terminated from employment with Baltimore City if unsuccessful on the National Certifying exam or fails to take the exam by the end of 18 months of employment.
  • If practicing on a Multi-State Compact Registered Nurse License, the nurse must obtain an advance practice certification issued by the Maryland State Board of Nursing.
  • Knowledge of the principles, objectives and techniques of community health nursing.
  • Knowledge of the diagnostic treatment and consultation skills expected of a nurse practitioner and/or nurse midwife.
  • Ability to interview and record the medical history of patients.
  • Ability to assess the physical condition of patients and determine medical problems.
  • Ability to treat minor physical illnesses.
  • Ability to deal with patients and physicians and other health care professionals.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports
