About The Position

The Division of Student Affairs fosters student growth and development. The Division of Student Affairs aids, directs and informs students about services and programs that will expand students' educational experiences and prepare them for diverse lives in local and global communities. The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for many of the outside the classroom/off campus aspects of student life at ECSU, including student engagement and leadership; career services; student disability services, residential life; student activities; community standards; special programs and services; student health & counseling services. The Office of Student Health Services provides a continuum of maintenance and preventive health care and health education services to the students. Description of Work The nurse practitioner/physician extender at Student Health Services will provide patient care by obtaining patient histories, performing physical examinations, ordering therapeutic and diagnostic testing as appropriate, prescribing medications and developing a plan of care to meet the patient's needs. This individual will function as a member of the provider staff to provide both routine general medical treatments and assessments, as well as perform minor non-invasive procedures as needed. Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position Overall: The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Extender will spend the majority of time in health services conducting independent patient visits and will see a broad range of patient conditions. This position is an invaluable addition the clinical staff as the Provider and functions very similar to an MD. This position not only provides independent patient care but also provides daily oversight of patient clinical care, ensuring effective clinical staff competency in the day to day clinical operations. Professional Knowledge: This position needs to possess a broad range of knowledge related to possible patient needs. In ECSU health services those needs are typically general practice adult care, pediatrics, women's health, orthopedic issues, and a basic knowledge of common mental health issues. This position will be asked to treat patients that may be presenting with symptoms related to any of those specialty areas and this position will be expected to obtain ongoing continuing education as it relates to current trends and best practices. Patient Care: This position must be able to assist the patient with understanding the diagnosis, the short term and if applicable the long term ramifications of the diagnosis and must be able to provide clear and concise instructions on treatment plans and next steps. This position must also be able to answer questions from patients, staff and colleagues on medical conditions and plan of care. The position will coordinate the orientation process for non-provider clinicians and ensure that appropriate levels of clinical competency are maintained.

Requirements

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the North Carolina Board of Nursing
  • Completion of a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners
  • Approved to practice medical acts by the Joint Subcommittee
