About The Position

The Advanced Practitioner Services will assist in providing clinical and medical services in support of the Health Service Department at the Federal Correctional Complex-Hazelton.

Requirements

  • Hold a graduate or higher-level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
  • Have successfully passed the National Council Licensure Examination.
  • Maintain status as a licensed nurse practitioner, including completion of all requirements for Continuing Medical Education (CME) and re-certification.
  • Must provide proof of current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
  • One year of experience providing advanced practice provider services in emergency care, acute care, ambulatory/outpatient care, psychiatric care, and/or medical/surgical care.
  • Be a graduate from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
  • Have successfully completed the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination.
  • Maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for Continuing Medical Education (CME) and recertification.
  • Must possess proof of a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a physician assistant from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross

Nice To Haves

  • Three or more years of experience in emergency care, acute care, ambulatory/outpatient care, psychiatric care, and/or medical/surgical care.
  • Experience in providing healthcare in a correctional setting.
  • Additional professional education and certifications such as advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), International Trauma Life Support (ITLS), etc.

Responsibilities

  • Comprehensive assessments and management of uncomplicated acute and stable chronic health problems of inmates.
  • Assist and work collaboratively with the physician in the management of selected complex medical problems.
  • Perform initial comprehensive medical and psychosocial screenings.
  • Perform physical examinations and risk evaluations of inmates.
  • Perform basic dental examinations and detect abnormalities of the teeth and gums.
  • Perform mental health evaluations, including the ability to screen for suicidal risk, and conduct daily sick calls.
  • Assisting the physician and other providers with procedures.
  • Administering medications.
  • Obtaining intravenous access for administration of intravenous fluids and/or medications, providing a wide range of emergency services, in the absence of the physician, including primary care for trauma and life-saving procedures.
  • Performing minor surgical procedures, such as incision and drainage, suturing of lacerations, removal of cysts, and removal/repair of ingrown toenails after consultation with the physician, prescribing medications and treatment for illnesses.
  • Establish diagnostic impressions and request appropriate diagnostic tests (e.g., laboratory, x-ray, visual acuity, electrocardiogram, etc.).
  • Interpreting results and selected laboratory findings, including, but not limited to, urinalysis, complete blood counts, metabolic panels, and various cultures for bacterial infection and antibiotic susceptibility.
  • Order and/or interpret audiologic testing and screening of distance and near vision as well as colorblindness, providing preliminary interpretation of radiographs, including dental radiographs, to identify gross abnormalities such as fractures, displacements, etc.
  • Interpret electrocardiogram tracings and have the ability to detect cardiac abnormalities.
  • Function as a member of a primary care team under the direction of a physician and in collaboration with other disciplines and providers.
  • Enter pertinent clinical information in an electronic medical record system in a timely manner and follow proper documentation procedures.
