About The Position

The Physician Assistant or Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner will join the Breast Surgery team in the Department of Surgery to expand clinical breast care under the direction of the breast surgery attendings. The role of the extender will be to serve primarily as the advanced practice provider (APP) for the High Risk and Benign Breast Disease Clinic. This role involves independent patient evaluation, breast cancer risk assessment, clinical management, patient education, care coordination, and collaborative care with breast radiologists, genetic counselors, and other multidisciplinary breast providers. Dedicated clinic time will be provided to provide independent patient care, and opportunities for surgical first assist. The APP will be instrumental in managing and developing clinic workflows to ensure comprehensive and compassionate care for individuals at increased risk for breast cancer and those diagnosed with benign breast conditions.

Requirements

  • Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Must meet requirements set forth by the Medical Staff Office to obtain and retain privileges to practice as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant within UF Health Shands Hospital and/or the Shands UF Healthcare Network, as applicable.
  • Current and clear license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) in the State of Florida.
  • Board certification as PA-C or in a relevant NP specialty (FNP, ANP, WHNP).
  • BLS is required; ACLS preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years clinical experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments, including history, physical exams, and diagnostic interpretation for treatment of benign and high-risk breast disease.
  • Identify and stratify breast cancer risk using standardized tools and develop individualized surveillance plans for high-risk breast cancer patients.
  • Order and interpret imaging and laboratory studies as clinically indicated.
  • Perform in-office procedures as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with radiology, high-risk oncology, and primary care teams to coordinate patient care.
  • Ensure timely communication of test results and plan of care to patients and referring providers.
  • Counsel patients on breast health, breast cancer risk reduction strategies, including lifestyle modifications, medical therapies, and surgical risk reduction options when indicated.
  • Community outreach opportunities for patient education are available.
  • Participate in the development and optimization of clinic protocols and patient care workflows.
  • Monitor quality metrics and contribute to performance improvement initiatives.
  • Support efforts for clinical research and data tracking related to high-risk and benign breast populations.
