With 388 beds it is the second largest of Duke Health's four hospitals and offers a comprehensive range ofmedical, surgical, and diagnostic services, including orthopedics, weight-loss surgery, women's services, and heart and vascular services. Job Summary The Preoperative Clinic APP provides a thorough evaluation of a patient’s medical/surgical history and optimizes modifiable risk factors prior to planned procedures and surgeries requiring anesthesia.  They also provide medical co-management to postoperative patients in the inpatient setting with the support of a hospitalist.   Emphasis is placed on cardiovascular function, respiratory conditions, anemia, smoking cessation, diabetes, nutrition, perioperative geriatric considerations and obstructive sleep apnea screening.  Position requires screening for all types of procedures and surgeries within a broad range of specialties and in all age groups.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • NP will treat ages 14 and up: FNP, ANP, AGNP may apply.
  • BLS/ACLS certification is required before hire.
  • Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON with approval to practice as NP.
  • Recent board certified APP graduates or pending graduates with no experience will be considered.
  • 3 years of RN experience strongly preferred.
  • Acute care RN experience, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed and thorough medical/surgical history assessment
  • Physical exams
  • Medication reconciliation
  • Provide perioperative instructions/guidance
  • Order testing (e.g., lab work, EKG, cardiac echo, imaging procedures, etc.)
  • Arrange consults (diabetes, nutrition, smoking cessation, anemia, and cardiology, etc.)
  • Prescribe treatment or services to further optimize the patient prior to planned procedure, if needed.
  • Follow up on ordered laboratory studies, diagnostic procedures, etc.
  • Provide explanation as to the necessity and the results of ordered testing and procedures.
  • Participate in clinic research activities if needed.
  • Work with a supervising physician from the Department of Medicine.
  • Any other related duties required to service pre-surgical and/or pre-anesthesia care
  • Provide medical co-management to postoperative patients in the inpatient setting
