Job Location Duke University Hospital, Inpatient Medical Oncology Service Job Summary The Medical Oncology Advanced Practice Provider provides direct patient care on the inpatient medical oncology unit and works in collaboration with attending physicians and other medical professionals by collecting and documenting data, obtaining/ordering diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, laboratory studies and professional consultations. The age-specific scope of practice is between 18 and older.

Requirements

  • NP: Graduate of accredited MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner Program for adult care
  • PA: Graduate of ARC accredited Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree Physician Assistant Program
  • NP: Any NP certification that treats adults (FNP, ANP, AGNP, AGACNP, etc.)
  • PA: PA-C
  • NP: Unrestricted RN licensure issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as a NP
  • PA: Unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as PA
  • Both: Federal and State DEA independent license with unrestricted prescriptive authority
  • APP experience is preferred, ideally Oncology related, but recent or new APP grads graduating by August 2024 are welcome to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and maintain high standards of patient care throughout the continuum of cancer diagnosis.
  • Elicit detailed and accurate patient histories and perform through physical examinations.
  • Order appropriate diagnostic imaging and tests to determine medical and post treatment diagnoses, patient conditions, treatment toxicities.
  • Formulate appropriate treatment plans with critical thinking skills and high-level clinical judgement including prescribing appropriate medications.
  • Chart patient progress maintaining detailed and accurate health records
  • Participate in clinical research projects and understand the importance of documentation of toxicities and data collection.
  • Communication among multi-disciplinary teams to support patient care.
  • Collaborating, supporting and building strong relationships with supervising, back-up supervising physicians, APP colleagues, and team members.
  • Participate in education of patients, family members, new staff, students and other learners.
  • See scheduled and unscheduled patients.
  • Attend program required meetings.
  • Maintain up to date clinical and professional knowledge via approved CME.
  • Protect patient confidentiality, maintain ethics and abide by North Carolina laws and Duke Health System policies.
  • Maintain institutional requirements for compliance.
