About The Position

Advanced Nurse Practitioner will work in a collaborative practice arrangement with board certified Pain Management physicians in the care of in-patients with acute, chronic and/or cancer pain at Barnes Jewish Hospital as well as support and enhance the teaching mission for fellows and residents on the pain service. Position is full-time and work approximately 40 hours per week with some weekend coverage.

  • Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) - Missouri Division of Professional Registration
  • Basic Life Support - American Heart Association
  • Basic Life Support - American Red Cross
  • Certified Nurse Practitioner - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation
  • Certified Nurse Practitioner - Missouri Division of Professional Registration
  • APN licensure or ability to successfully obtain licensure within three months of date of hire.
  • Certain/additional certifications may be necessary based on area of specialty.
  • Basic Life Support certification (Online Basic Life Support certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the Basic Life Support requirement).

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care to include obtaining patient history, performing patient assessment via observation, interview and examination; orders, performs, and interprets diagnostic studies.
  • Serves as a pain resource for hospital nurses and other support staff.
  • Assists with catheter set-up, placement and blousing.
  • Administers PCA bolus doses.
  • Titrates, initiates, and maintains therapies.
  • Operates and troubleshoots analgesic infusion devices.
  • Assists, supports and covers for pain fellows and residents allowing them the atmosphere to focus on the learning experience.
  • Carries the Pain on-call pager during the day.
  • Submits charges for in-patient services rendered including, but not limited to, subsequent in-patient e&m services, and management of epidural or subarachnoid drug administration for post-operative pain relief.
  • Creates, implements, and keeps teaching tools up-to-date and current.
  • Provides counseling and education of patients and their families/caregivers concerning preventative health, treatment options, and community resources.
  • Monitors/ensures accuracy of patient medical records, maintains all required reports, records, statistics, etc.
  • Works in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards
  • Regularly participates in constant quality improvement and process improvement activities centered on the goal of providing exceptional, evidence-based patient care.
