About The Position

The Bariatric/Minimally Invasive Surgery Nurse Navigator will provide clinical coordination, patient education, and navigation across the bariatric surgical pathway to improve access, adherence, and outcomes for patients pursuing metabolic, bariatric and minimally invasive surgery. ADVANTAGES OF WORKING FOR UNLV HEALTH Clinic Hours are Monday through Friday, 8AM to 5PM  (Actual scheduled hours may vary depending on business need) 12 Paid Holidays per year, starting with your first day of employment 20 + PTO days per year (Depending on Position) 3% 401K Contribution, even if you do not contribute Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits that start the first of the month following your start date CPR Certification reimbursed by UNLV Health Pay may be higher than listed range, based on experience

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with current Nevada state license; BSN preferred.
  • Minimum 2–3 years clinical nursing experience, ideally in bariatrics, surgical care, or case management.
  • Experience with patient education, care coordination, and multidisciplinary teams is strongly preferred
  • Excellent communication and teaching skills for group and one-on-one education.
  • Strong organizational skills and proficiency with EMR systems.
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to support diverse patient populations.
  • Data-driven mindset to monitor KPIs and support program improvement.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Must be able to pay close attention to details
  • May include standing, sitting, and/or walking for extended periods
  • May include performing repetitive tasks
  • May include working on a special schedule (i.e. evenings and weekends)

  • Certification in Nurse Navigation, Case Management, or Bariatric Nursing is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead preoperative group bariatric education: Plan, develop, and deliver standardized weekly or monthly group education sessions covering surgical options, perioperative expectations, nutrition, behavioral health, and insurance/authorization steps.
  • Referral intake and triage: Review and evaluate incoming referrals for completeness, appropriateness, and urgency; coordinate missing documentation and route referrals to the multidisciplinary team.
  • Care coordination: Serve as the primary point of contact for patients from referral through 90-day postoperative follow-up; schedule appointments, coordinate pre-op testing, and facilitate multidisciplinary consultations.
  • Patient assessment and education: Collaborate with physicians/Advance Practice Practitioner to create individualized preoperative assessments, reinforce pre-op weight-loss and exercise plans, and provide tailored education on risks, benefits, and lifestyle changes.
  • Multidisciplinary liaison: Collaborate with surgeons, advance practice practitioners, dietitians, behavioral health, anesthesia, social work, and primary care to streamline care pathways and reduce delays.
  • Documentation and quality tracking: Maintain accurate EMR records, track program metrics (referral-to-consult time, no-show rates, completion of pre-op requirements), and support quality improvement initiatives.
  • Insurance and authorization support: Assist patients with insurance verification, prior authorizations, and appeals as needed.
  • Patient advocacy and barriers resolution: Identify social determinants or logistical barriers and connect patients to resources (transportation, financial counseling, community programs).
  • Functions effectively in a Matrix Management environment
  • Completes any duties and special assignments as requested
