About The Position

Position Summary Directs and coordinates clinical activities in the department. Maintains responsibility for planning and managing patient care, departmental activities and personnel. Provides leadership and direction in accordance with organizational goals and objectives. Maintains responsibility and accountability for 24 hour per day management. Demonstrates the ability to work with the patient's growth, development and psychosocial needs specific to each population being served.

Requirements

  • Experience as an Assistant Nurse Manager or comparable management/leadership role.
  • Maintains professional competence through continuing education and learning experiences.
  • 3-5 years of experience in related clinical field; 1-2 years management/leadership experience preferred.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Demonstrates advanced level leadership, problem-solving, decision making, communication skills. High tolerance for stress. Demonstrates positive interpersonal and strong people skills. Demonstrated clinical expertise in area of specialty.
  • Graduate from an approved nursing educational program as defined by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN); BSN in nursing preferred.
  • Current Florida State license as a Registered Nurse.
  • ACLS and BLS required and other specific requirements depending on specialty unit (PALS, NRP, STABLE, etc.)
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally with all levels of the organization
  • Must clear background and drug test required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs daily rounds on unit and patients to ensure optimal quality of care and customer services is being delivered by staff.
  • Reviews staffing patterns weekly to ensure adequate personnel utilization and adequacy of staffing to meet acuity needs.
  • Monitors department to ensure safe environment by performing Environment of Care rounds.
  • Monitors departmental performance improvement activities.
  • Provides investigation follow-up on incidents.
  • Consults with or advises Director of situation requiring follow-up or specific attention.
  • Maintains policies pertinent to area up to date and revises them as per hospital requirement.
  • Responsible for staff schedule with appropriate coverage; schedule is available to staff two weeks before effective date.
  • Uses costs saving measures to decrease the use of overtime/agency as appropriate.
  • Implements appropriate controls to remain within the Unit's HPPD and LMRS budget while providing consistent quality patient care.
  • Ensures Hourly rounds are conducted by all staff and inpatient staff consistently use the 4 P's.
  • Facilitates orientation of new staff in collaboration with Assistant Nurse Manager and assigned Preceptors.
  • Counsels staff and takes appropriate action when necessary. Follows the steps of disciplinary action process.
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Nurse Manager, conducts and reviews employee's annual performance evaluations submitting them to Human Resources on or before the anniversary date.
  • Ensures RN's perform bedside shift report and completion of communication board.
  • Monitors nursing documentation, care plans, patient and family education/teaching, and discharge /transfer activities.
  • Maintain or exceed unit target rate for C-Diff and MRSA
  • Monitors medication administration and demonstrates reduction in errors and increase in medication barcode scanning as evidenced by pharmacy report
  • Maintain or exceed target rate for overall fall's and falls with injury
  • Maintains or exceeds target level for hospital acquired pressure ulcers
  • Maintains staff satisfaction and wellbeing, perception of safety, employee commitment, intention to stay as targeted by annual Employee Engagement Survey
  • Maintains or exceeds target PSMS, develops strategies to increase and maintain overall Patient Satisfaction.
  • Maintain or exceed unit target rate for CLABSI
  • Maintain or exceed unit target rate for CAUTI
  • Completes ESRM and follow-ups in a timely manner
  • Monitors front line staff activity or assignments designated (ex. Tempo Board, Optilink, Updating of Wound book, blood transfusion audits, restraint log or any other hospital initiative)
  • Proactively conducts department rounds and reports findings related to Environment of Care to Safety Officer or other responsible personnel, then follows-up to assure timely and satisfactory resolution/closure.
  • Participates with PGH Environment of Care Team during their scheduled rounds, reviews findings, then follows-up to assure timely and satisfactory closure.
  • Provides department-specific training for new employees and once annually for current employees that addresses specific employee expectations and responsibilities regarding fire drills/safety, disaster response, unit security, clinical equipment use, and hazardous waste disposal.
