About The Position

The Durham VA Health Care System is looking to fill one (1) full time Registered Nurse Manager vacancy for the Emergency Department service line. Job Description/Scope of Practice The Durham VA Emergency Department (ED) is a busy modern 27-bed ED that sees approximately 36,000 patients per year. The ED consists of two triage rooms, 23 medical patient exam rooms all with critical care capability, and a locked 4-bed emergency psychiatric area. The ED is operational 24 hours a day/ 7 days per week providing emergency services to all populations who present for care. RNs and LPNs provide care in collaboration with an interdisciplinary provider team (MD, NP, PA, Residents, Fellows, Social Work, Pharmacy, Dietary, and Psychiatry) and support staff including laboratory, radiology, Psychiatry Emergency Care staff, and Medical Support Assistants. The work of the Nurse Manager is supported by an excellent administrative staff, including a Quality Consultant, a Clinical Nurse Educator, and an Administrative Officer all who are dedicated only to ED work as their full-time job. The VA Emergency Department operates to the standards of a busy community emergency department, and bases policies, procedures, and clinical operations on EMTALA laws, and ENA and ACEP guidelines. Quality improvement efforts are assessed and evaluated continuously to help achieve our mission and ensure patient satisfaction. The Emergency Department has earned an excellent reputation with the VA hospital and enjoys strong central administrative support The Nurse Manager is accountable for the delivery of patient care in the Emergency Department, with the following responsibilities:

Requirements

  • A minimum of five years successful nursing practice
  • Three years of successful emergency care nursing experience
  • Minimum of at one years of successful management experience
  • Experience with the mental health patient population
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with patients, families and other members of an interdisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated history of collaborative relationships with physicians and other support services and leadership
  • Documented evidence of knowledge and skill including (but not limited to): change management, problem solving, customer relations, decision making, priority setting, organization, critical thinking
  • Ability to work independently

Responsibilities

  • Daily Operations to include but not limited to coordination of care delivery, facilitating patient flow, and assuring quality patient care
  • Management, leadership, coaching, development, and evaluation of nursing and clinical support staff
  • Quality improvement activities to monitor, assess performance measures, performance monitors, ESI index, length of stay; develop and implement action plans to enhance performance.
  • Facilitating teamwork to accomplish positive patient care outcomes and patient satisfaction
  • Maintaining constant state of JCAHO readiness
  • Activities to support the mission and vision of the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Durham VAMC
