The Banner Health Nurse Extern program offers nursing students within 12 months of graduation (Junior or Senior) the opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience under the supervision of an RN preceptor. Externs will practice various skills such as patient assessment, medication administration, IV pump adjustments, oxygen management, and basic EMR data collection. They can also practice any skill for which they have received didactic and clinical instruction and can provide a skill checklist from an accredited nursing program. The program allows externs to spend time with clinical case managers, observe procedures, and participate in activities relevant to their patient population. The goal is for externs to continue as New Grads in the same unit after obtaining their RN license. This position expands clinical experience through competency assessment, classroom training, patient care planning, implementation, observation, evaluation, and reporting significant observations. The Nurse Extern role is not permanent, with employment impacted by the Nurse Program policy. The unit is a fast-paced 24-bed abdominal transplant/surgical oncology unit caring for kidney, liver, pancreas transplant, and surgical oncology patients. Banner - University Medical Center Tucson is a nationally recognized Level 1 Trauma Center and Magnet Recognized hospital, known for exceptional patient care, teaching, and research, including specialized pediatric services at Diamond Children's and comprehensive heart, cancer, neuroscience, and multi-organ transplant programs.
