Nursing education is a practice specialty that seeks to improve the health of the community through enhancing the professional practice and competence of registered nurses and other nursing personnel. The ortho/trauma nurse educator is a valued member of the nursing practice and development team. Partnering with educator peers as well as other leaders, this role helps to meet the educational needs of nursing across Corewell Health West through standardization, innovation and the application of evidence-based practice. Primary work locations would be the Grand Rapids hospitals and Doug Meijer Medical Innovation Building. Nurse educators are REQUIRED to obtain their nursing administration or professional/specialty certification within 12 months of assuming the role, or within 12 months of achieving eligibility to sit for the exam if not eligible upon hire in to the role. Essential Functions Oversees orientation, as part of the onboarding process, to ensure that new hire/transfer employees have the knowledge and skill to safely practice independently in their role. The educator develops, coordinates, manages, facilitates, conducts, and evaluates orientation programs for nursing and other healthcare personnel. Develops, coordinates, manages, facilitates, conducts and evaluates competency programs. The educator collaborates with operational leaders to address deficits in employee’s knowledge and skills. Designs and develops educational opportunities to achieve specific outcomes related to identified deficits or opportunities for improvement in knowledge, skills and practice. This may include obtaining continuing education approval. Fosters interprofessional learning and enables effective collaboration to improve practice outcomes for the nurse and other health care personnel. Functions as a mentor, coach, and resource in the development of nursing and other clinical support roles as the employee transitions throughout their career life cycle. Applies research, evidenced based practice and quality improvement principles in education, professional role development, orientation, and competency.
