The Nurse in Charge (NIC) is a designated clinical leader for a patient care area, working under the supervision of and in collaboration with the Department Director to plan and coordinate care at the service/department level. This position is responsible and accountable for cost-effective decision-making regarding operations, including the utilization and application of resources such as human resources, patient care environment, and supplies. The NIC directs and supervises professional and non-professional staff, determines staff assignments and scheduling, and ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. They participate in the development of patient care standards and delivery of care processes, facilitate and participate in staff development including orientation and training, and contribute to performance evaluation and management through coaching and counseling. The role also involves participating in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the quality improvement and safety plan, maintaining a clinical environment that demonstrates service excellence, and functioning as a professional role model and resource person. The authority to exercise these responsibilities often requires the use of independent judgment. The NIC supports the Mission of Trinity Health and Holy Cross Health.
