About the Position: This position is located at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum Unit, Fort Hood, Texas. Fort Cavazos is a United States Army post located in the beautiful 'hill and lake' country of Central Texas between Killeen and Copperas Cove and is approximately 60 miles north of the capital city of Austin, 50 miles south of Waco, 160 miles south of Dallas, and 150 miles north of San Antonio. The post is named after Gen. Richard E. Cavazos, a native Texan and the US Army’s first Hispanic four-star general. Formerly named Fort Hood for Confederate General John Bell Hood, the post is located halfway between Austin and Waco, about 60 mi from each, within the U.S. state of Texas. The post is the headquarters of III Armored Corps and First Army Division West and is home to the 1st Cavalry Division and 3rd Cavalry Regiment, among others. Its origin was the need for wide-open space to test and train with World War II tank destroyers. The War Department announced the location in January 1942, and the initial completion was set for that August. As originally constructed, Fort Cavazos had an area of 158,706 acres, with billeting for 6,007 officers and 82,610 enlisted personnel. • Basic Requirement for Nurse (Clinical/Labor/Delivery): Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. ( Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts. ).
• Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.
• Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
• Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. • Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
• Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
• In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Education/Experience: A diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program and possession of at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or above) which includes assisting with complex procedures, providing comprehensive nursing care to obstetric patients, and overseeing healthcare personnel.
• OR Education: A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field.
• Exemption: You are exempt from the qualification requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet one of the requirement below. • Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) from a professional nursing program.
• OR 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education from a professional nursing program.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Charge Nurse which includes assigning duties, ensuring staff work is accomplished timely, reviewing nursing care plans, and advising attending physicians of significant changes in a patient's condition.
• Lead patient care conferences and conduct classes as part of continuing in-service training such as electronic fetal monitoring, grief support, intra-operative care, antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and normal newborn transition care.
• Assist physicians and anesthesia providers with complex procedures such as insertion of internal monitors, placement of epidural catheters, placement of invasive monitoring lines (i.e. arterial, cordis), and induction of general anesthesia.
• Administer potent intravenous (including IV push) drugs such as labor induction agents, antihypertensives, insulin, blood products, and magnesium sulfate.
• Perform the circulation role in the operating room for planned and emergency cesarean-section, dilatation and curettage, cervical cerclage, and cesarean-hysterectomy.
• Utilize the nursing process to formulate a nursing plan of care relative to patient’s physiological, psychological, and sociological condition in order to provide ongoing and in-depth assessment of patient problems, strengths and limitations.
