About The Position

The Molecular Imaging and Nuclear Medicine Staff Technologist is responsible for patient contact, care, and monitoring, including the procurement, preparation, quality control, dispensing, dose calibration, administration, and disposal of radiopharmaceuticals and adjunct non-radiopharmaceuticals. This role also involves administering pharmaceuticals, performing quality control procedures, and operating various imaging, laboratory, and computer instrumentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's of Science in a scientific field with a certificate in Nuclear Medicine Technology from an accredited academic program OR an Associate's in Nuclear Medicine Technology from an accredited academic program plus 2 years experience.
  • Current registration in Nuclear Medicine (NMTCB or ARRT (NM)).
  • At least one of the following advanced certifications and current registries: NMTCB(PET), NMTCB(NCT), ARRT(CT), ARRT(MR).
  • Current Massachusetts Radiologic Technologist License.
  • NIH Human Subjects Protection in Research Certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or CPR.
  • Knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and medical terminology.
  • Analytical skills to effectively utilize knowledge towards imaging processes, techniques and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Nuclear Medicine Information System (NMIS), Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS).
  • Ability to rely on experience, judgment and time management skills to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Ability to adhere to safety standards set forth by the Radiology Department, BMC and other regulatory agencies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients, instruct students, and interact with other staff technologists.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with members of the healthcare delivery team and staff.
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.
  • Ability to set priorities and solve problems.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency requests.

Responsibilities

  • Operate gamma cameras with sealed sources of radioactive material for transmission imaging with SPECT, PET, PEM, and cameras with x-ray tubes for transmission imaging and MRI, including diagnostic CT and MR.
  • Administer oral and intravenous contrast.
  • Operate scanners with x-ray tubes for the measurement of bone density.
  • Stay up-to-date in the field and learn new modalities as they become available.
  • Perform In-Vivo diagnostic testing, including procurement, preparation, quality control, dispensing, dose calibration of radiopharmaceuticals, and oral, inhalation, or intravenous administration.
  • Perform laboratory tests, including safe and sterile handling of radiopharmaceuticals and adjunct non-radioactive chemicals.
  • Operate laboratory equipment such as scales, centrifuge, pipettes, flow hoods, Xenon traps, well counters, probes, and other detection devices.
  • Collect samples for laboratory procedures and perform pertinent in-vitro diagnostic testing and laboratory analyses (e.g., urine, blood, creatinine, secretions, saliva, breath, stool).
  • Work within the nuclear pharmacy under the direction of an authorized Permit holder.
  • Perform procurement, preparation, complex compounding, quality control, dispensing, dose calculation, identification, documentation, administration, disposal, storage, and safe handling of radioactive materials.
  • Perform appropriate chemical, physical, and biological tests on compounded radiopharmaceuticals and interpret results.
  • Evaluate analytical test methods, calibrate or functionally check equipment, and document procedure validation.
  • Ensure compounded radiopharmaceuticals meet USP monograph specifications (radionuclidic purity, radiochemical purity, chemical purity, pH, particle size, sterility, apyogenicity).
  • Assist in the application, management, preparation, and administration of radiotherapeutic procedures.
  • Administer nonradiopharmaceutical agents by oral, topical, and intravenous routes under the direction of an authorized user.
  • Prepare patients for exams, ensuring comfort and modesty.
  • Accommodate patient and staffing needs through flexible scheduling and timely studies.
  • Perform appropriate studies as determined by policy and procedure and requisition.
  • Ensure exams requested match patient's condition and/or history, seeking more information if necessary.
  • Complete requisitions, interview questionnaires, and gather necessary patient information to assist physicians.
  • Administer radiopharmaceuticals and monitor characteristics and functions of tissues or organs.
  • Observe metabolic changes, providing additional imaging and variations of techniques as requested.
  • Complete procedures properly and timely, providing quality work.
  • Document procedures including ICD9 codes and proper demographics for interpretation and billing.
  • Participate in IV line placement, blood glucose monitoring, pharmaceutical, and radiopharmaceutical training and pass all competencies.
  • Maintain current applicable licenses, registrations, and certifications.
  • Participate in the National Institute of Health's Human Subjects Protection in Research Certification Training and pass bi-annum certification.
  • Follow established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Perform all procedures utilizing ionizing radiation safely and effectively, applying federal, state, and BMC regulations.
  • Perform appropriate radioactive contamination monitoring, decontamination procedures, and properly dispose of radioactive waste.
  • Assure patient radiation safety through annual compliance with radiation safety training.
  • Maintain and adhere to managed care guidelines and equipment through interaction with management and service vendors.
  • Perform patient-focused customer service and ensure standards are achieved.
  • Communicate patient complaints professionally to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and professional conduct.
  • Handle telephone calls and requests for services professionally.
  • Treat patients and fellow staff with dignity and respect.
  • Ensure all required documentation is properly completed for billing purposes.
  • Understand and adhere to managed care guidelines.
  • Work hours as regularly scheduled or according to operational needs, including on-call hours on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Follow all departmental established policies and procedures.
  • Utilize hospital's behavioral standards for decision making.
  • Train and mentor student technologists, teaching protocols, IV placement, and performing student evaluations.
  • Perform fusion imaging and record production for doctors and patients.
  • Provide assistance and information on reports when patient case questions arise.
  • Perform duties in all department areas, including all BU/BMC medical campuses when appropriate.
  • Provide service and care to patients of all ages and ailments/conditions.
  • Monitor patient condition and involve nursing, physician, or other staff for further monitoring/solutions when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
