About The Position

Duke Energy is seeking a Mechanical or Civil Engineer I or II, preferably with experience working in a utility industry, or heavy industrial manufacturing field and experience working with: pumps, valves, heat exchangers, structural steel, concrete, etc. This Engineering position will be located in Huntersville, NC in the Carolinas Nuclear Generation/McGuire Nuclear Station/Mech & Civil Design Engineering team organization that supports nuclear generation stations in North and South Carolina.

Requirements

  • Nuclear Engineer I Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering 0-2 years of engineering experience
  • Nuclear Engineer II Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering 2-4 years of engineering experience
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
  • In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
  • Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • In addition to required degree, 3-4 years related work experience within a utility company or Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) firm.
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam
  • Passed Professional Engineer (PE) Exam
  • Background in heat exchangers, pumps, valves and rotating equipment
  • Understanding of engineering theories and principles in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and hydraulic fundamentals.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management
  • Strong communication skills required to provide effective inter-discipline coordination on projects.
  • Ability to independently research engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Experience with general computer skills including Windows, e-mail, and Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) and engineering products (e.g. Mathcad, AutoCAD, GT Strudl, ANSYS, AutoPipe, Caesar II, SuperPipe, Solidworks or equivalent 3D modeling software).
  • Working knowledge of ASME Codes (examples: B31.1, Section III, Section IX, Section XI), AISC Steel Construction Codes (ASD, LFRD, and ACI Concrete Design Code).
  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
  • Proficient in principles of project management.
  • Background in Mechanics of Materials/Finite Element Analysis
  • Experience with Dynamic/Seismic Structural Analysis
  • Experience with nuclear industry standard design process.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support mechanical/civil technical design and project coordination.
  • Research engineering and design issues, evaluates alternatives, determines and presents recommendations to resolve issues.
  • Develop or revise design/procurement specifications or technical requirements documents to support engineering design changes.
  • Develop the scope, technical basis, installation and testing requirements for engineering design changes, which include but are not limited to Stress Analysis, Structural Analysis, Dynamic/Seismic Analysis, Steel and Concrete Design.
  • Provide ongoing support of assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities.
  • Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes.
  • Develop licensing screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes
  • Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes.
  • Specify vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, rotating equipment and other process equipment.
  • General understanding of Project Schedules and Budgets as well as providing weekly project status updates.
  • Accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
