About The Position

The Mechanical Design Engineer – Nuclear Fuel will be responsible for the mechanical design, development, and analysis of nuclear fuel products. This role requires collaboration with sourcing, fabrication and quality, thermal-mechanical analysts, material scientists, fuel experts, and nuclear/thermal-hydraulic analysis engineers to assure products perform within licensed and Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF) performance expectations in a fast-paced environment. GNF is a business of GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH) based in Wilmington, NC. The Mechanical Design Engineer - Fuels will be responsible for the mechanical design, development, analysis, and production support of nuclear fuel products. This role requires collaboration with sourcing, fabrication, quality, thermal-mechanical analysts, material scientists, fuel experts, and nuclear/thermal-hydraulic analysis engineers to assure product perform within licensed and GNF performance expectations in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in mechanical engineering or equivalent engineering discipline from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum 2 years of mechanical design, analysis experience or manufacturing engineering experience
  • Eligibility Requirements The REQUIRED work locations is our Headquarters in Wilmington, NC
  • This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in drafting practices (including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and 3D CAD) and analysis
  • Experience in FEA Analysis using Ansys or LS DYNA
  • Basic understanding of BWR Nuclear Fuel
  • Proven track record of problem-solving ability and ability to perform complex engineering analyses resulting in thorough and complete documentation
  • Strong communication skills and capable of articulating specific technical topics or assignments
  • Working knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, vibration analysis, heat transfer, welding, statistics and finite element analysis
  • Working knowledge of casting development/production
  • A self-starter willing to take initiatives
  • Ability to make decisions with speed and accuracy based on the best available information
  • Strong customer focus and clear understanding of nuclear industries

Responsibilities

  • Create mechanical design solutions to support the development of new products & design modifications to improve existing products
  • Understand the fabrication processes for component and assemblies, the post fabrication transportation and handling and the customer application requirements for fuel products and services
  • Prepare drawings and specifications for new and existing fuel designs
  • Identify, document and lead the resolution of technical risks within each project
  • Provide well written, well organized documented engineering analyses to assure design adequacy
  • Perform design reviews and production readiness reviews
  • Address emergent customer and manufacturing issues
  • Work closely with sourcing and manufacturing to support cost reduction activities
  • Design test procedures and perform testing to address component and assembly adequacy
  • Develop procedures and work to improve engineering productivity
  • Prepare and present technical data to internal and external customers
  • Assist and provide support to the team technical leader and functional manager to plan, status and execute projects
  • Perform work with high quality in accordance with NRC regulations, customer requirements, and business quality assurance standards
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate activities with other team members on technical issues
