This position is full-time, 4-10hr shifts, M-F Under the supervision and direction of the Collaborating Physician and Sr. Administrative Manager, and in accordance with the rules and regulations of Massachusetts governing Nurse Practitioner (NP)/ Physician Assistant (PA) practice, the APP will support the inpatient service of Division of Gastrointestinal and Oncologic Surgery. Provides direct care to individual and families in the inpatient surgical care settings. In this role, the APP acts as the responding clinician providing direct care to individuals and families in the inpatient surgical settings in the peri-operative period. The APP is an integral member of the surgical team who is responsible for patient care including obtaining patient histories and physical exams, coordinating testing and consultations, ordering and implementing treatment plans formulated on morning rounds, communicating with attending surgeons, other members of the care team, RNs, case managers and house staff, referring physicians and patient families, performing patient education, facilitating necessary transfers, completing discharge summaries and preparing patients for discharge. This individual is responsible for coordinating care for multiple services both during the patient’s hospitalization and in the discharge setting. The NP plays a significant role in providing quality of care and continuity resulting in optimal and efficient healthcare delivery for patients and their families. The incumbent is responsible to maintaining state licensure in good standing. Skills and Experience: • 3-5 years’ experience in the Advanced Practice role preferred, particularly in the inpatient environment and surgical areas. • Will consider new grad APP with relevant prior experience. • Must be a highly motivated individual who will work in a collaborative manner with physicians and other clinicians • Demonstrated skills in delivering direct patient care at the advanced practice level, performing both collaboratively and independently. • Broad clinical understanding of inpatient surgical clinical care in the responding clinician role, including the ability to diagnose and treat acute problems that may arise in the peri-operative period; obtain patient histories, perform appropriate physical examinations, assess ongoing needs of patients during hospitalization and prepare them for discharge including coordination of care and patient education • Able to identify and solve routine and complex clinical care matters. - Maturity, self-confidence, and ability to support the management of patients across more than one discipline • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to prioritize effectively and complete tasks; flexibility to handle multiple tasks and deadline pressures. • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with good command of English language, including medical and scientific terminology. Able to effectively communicate clinical information to patients and family members. • Knowledge and compliance with all hospital, State and Federal regulatory requirements, including hospital Policy and procedures (where applicable to the performance of the job), JCAHO and HIPAA. Education/Degree: • Master’s degree or higher in Nursing as an APRN (either DNP or NP) or Master’s degree in Physician Assistant studies required. Licensure, Certifications, or Registration: • Current Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Licensure in Massachusetts • Current Massachusetts Controlled Substance Certificate and DEA license • Qualified in all basic and advanced cardiac life support standards as established by the American Heart Association Job Summary The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a licensed provider. The APP is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation.
