NextUp programs provide a comprehensive support system tailored to the unique needs of students who have experienced foster care. Throughout the semester, students meet regularly with staff and academic counselors to receive individualized services, including college transition planning, financial aid assistance, and guidance on course selection and post-college and career goals. The NextUp/EOPS Counselor will be dedicated to the enhancement of cultural and educational experiences of, and are committed to the academic success, personal growth, and self-actualization of students who have experienced foster care and other students within EOPS at Cuyamaca College. The NextUp/EOPS Counselor serves as a regular member of the Counseling Division faculty. This entails providing counseling services related to transfer, occupational programs, and career and academic skills development from a student centered and culturally sustaining lens. Under the Associate Dean of Student Services and Special Programs, regular/contract counselors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the visions, missions and values of the college and District. The NextUp/EOPS Counselor will serve students within the EOPS and NextUp programs, with a primary focus on students who have experienced foster care, and is expected to perform other duties consistent with their faculty job description as stated in the faculty contract.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development, or the equivalent,
  • Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages
  • Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages
  • shall have two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages
  • Education and experience providing counseling services to students who are educationally and economically disadvantaged.
  • Commitment to examine, reflect, and modify instructional, relational, classroom and counseling practices to effectively engage and support disproportionately impacted populations with a goal of closing the equity gaps.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, gender, racial, sexual orientation, religion, ethnic, disability, and high-trauma backgrounds.
  • Experience in college-level academic, personal, and career counseling.
  • Training and experience working with individuals and groups in providing personal counseling and crisis intervention support.
  • Ability to use technology in providing counseling services.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience conducting counseling-related workshops and orientations, and teaching counseling-related courses.
  • Commitment to keeping current on issues involving NextUp and EOPS policy and implementation changes and counseling in education.
  • Experience collaborating with other campus departments including CalWORKs, DSPS, Financial Aid, other student services departments, and academic/instructional departments.
  • Counseling experience working in a California Community College.
  • Experience collaborating with high schools and community organizations.
  • An understanding of the interconnectedness of socio-economic, cultural, environmental, and personal factors contributing to both the achievement of as well as barriers to success for students who have experienced foster care, formerly incarcerated/justice impacted, and LGBTQ+, as well as other marginalized student groups.
