About The Position

At The Kinetic Group, our interns play a vital role in advancing our mission to deliver high-quality, reliable ammunition to customers worldwide, offering you a unique chance to make a real impact in an industry fueled by precision and passion. The New Technologies Intern will support emerging technology initiatives by helping collect, scan, and organize internal documents and by contributing (under supervision) to an internal LLM Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG) solution. The intern will focus on Python development, foundational machine learning concepts, and practical implementation using Azure OpenAI and PostgreSQL. This position reports to the Enterprise IT Architect and is based out of our Anoka location.

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate student in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Machine Learning, or related field.
  • Demonstrated Python programming ability (coursework, labs, or projects).
  • Understanding of foundational machine learning concepts (e.g., embeddings, training vs. inference, evaluation basics).
  • Familiarity with relational databases or SQL concepts (preferably PostgreSQL).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to document work clearly.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail (important for document handling, metadata consistency, and repeatability).

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to Azure services and/or Azure OpenAI concepts (class projects, labs, certifications, or personal exploration).
  • Familiarity with APIs, JSON, and building small automation tools.
  • Coursework or projects related to NLP, information retrieval, search, or LLM applications.
  • Experience working with PDFs, OCR, or document processing libraries.
  • Comfort working in a team environment with code reviews and version control (e.g., Git).

Responsibilities

  • Assist with collecting, scanning, and organizing internal documents for use in search and AI workflows.
  • Support document preprocessing tasks such as text extraction (including OCR where applicable), file normalization, and metadata tagging.
  • Write and maintain Python scripts to automate ingestion and processing pipelines (e.g., parsing, chunking preparation, QA checks, and logging).
  • Help integrate prepared content into an internal RAG pipeline that uses Azure OpenAI for embeddings and/or generation.
  • Assist with storing and retrieving content and metadata in PostgreSQL (including supporting schemas that enable retrieval patterns used by RAG).
  • Participate in basic testing of retrieval quality and response usefulness; help document results and improvements.
  • Maintain clear documentation of scripts, workflows, and repeatable processes to support team knowledge sharing.
