A resident physician participates in an organized post graduate educational program in which they have daily contact with patients and assume increasing responsibility for their care under the supervision of the attending staff of the hospital. As each resident physician demonstrates increasing knowledge and ability, an increasing amount of reliance should be placed in their judgment in the diagnosis and in treatment of patients. Residents must have a combination of patient care, teaching, and research in their education program. Patient care responsibilities must include inpatient, outpatient, and consultation experiences. The physicians are given the opportunity to put into practice the principles of preventive medicine, diagnoses, therapy and patient management which they learned as medical students. Under the supervision of the attending staff, they are given progressively increasing responsibility to the end that he acquires confidence in their clinical judgment. For the training to be approved, the hospital where the residency is served must be approved by the Board of Directors of Palmetto General Hospital and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
