A resident physician participates in an organized post graduate educational program in which they have daily contact with patients and assume increasing responsibility for their care under the supervision of the attending staff of the hospital. The assumption of responsibility is the most important aspect of residency training. As each resident physician demonstrates increasing knowledge and ability, and increasing amount of reliance should be placed in their judgment in the diagnosis and in treatment of patients. They may also participate in the teaching of interns and medical students to an increasing extent. The physicians are given the opportunity to put into practice the principles of preventive medicine, diagnoses, therapy and patient management which they learned as medical students. Under the supervision of the attending staff, they are given progressively increasing responsibility to the end that they acquire confidence in their clinical judgment. For the training to be approved, the hospital where the residency is served must be approved by the Board of Directors of Palmetto General Hospital, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and/or the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
