About The Position

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Neurodiagnostic Technologist in the Neurophysiology department Hyde Park. In this role, you will perform restorative care activities with a patient-centered focus and provide surveillance and basic interpretation of various physiological monitoring for our patients. Under direct supervision, the Neurodiagnostic Technologist I performs standard procedures in an outpatient setting or as a portable study in the ER, ICU, radiology or inpatient units. The Neurodiagnostic Technologist I is responsible for the performance of all neurodiagnostic procedures in accordance the technical standards set forth by the American Society of Neurodiagnostic Technologists (ASET), the American Electroencephalography Society (AEEGS). The Neurodiagnostic Technologist I is required to maintain and improve his/her level of clinical and technical knowledge. Responsible for Documenting patient history in electronic medical record according to ACNS and departmental guidelines. With minimal guidance from the Neurodiagnostic Technologist I will be able to determine the correct montages, filter changes, and activation procedures to enhance epileptiform activity or waveform morphology. The Neurodiagnostic Technologist I plays a role in the general flow and operation of the lab.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Must have completed a clinical internship with a minimum of six (6) months’ experience working in a patient care environment doing EEG procedures, or one (1) year on-the-job training in an EEG department under direct supervision of Registered EEG Techs
  • Must obtain credentials within three (3) years of hire
  • Must hold an active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Must be proficient with the International 10-20 system
  • Must have entry-level knowledge of PC or Microsoft Windows
  • Must possess the EEG Technologist Competencies set forth by ASET’s National Competency Skill Standards

Nice To Haves

  • Graduated from an END Electro neurodiagnostic program or completed the ASET online EEG 12 module course certification
  • Must pass ASET competency skills and knowledge required by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) for national board certification

Responsibilities

  • Patient Interaction / History Taking
  • Explain procedure, Answers pertinent procedure questions
  • Obtains medical history and other relevant information from the patient or patient's chart
  • Routine EEG Recording / Electrode Application / Activation
  • Marks and measures patients with tape measures and grease pencil.
  • Utilize paste and adhesive tape, apply electrodes according to the 10/20 System.
  • Obtains standard or extended recordings in outpatient areas or as a portable study in the ED, ICU, NICU or on the inpatient wards.
  • When indicated by the circumstances of the EEG recording, monitors other variables such as EKG, EMG, EOG, or respiration.
  • Use standard activation procedures such as hyperventilation, photic-stimulation and sleep, when appropriate.
  • Additional stimulation to be performed on the unresponsive/comatose patients.
  • Select predetermined electrode combinations (montages).
  • Programs special montages or adds electrodes with assistance from senior technologists.
  • EEG Review / Wave Recognition
  • Recognizes artifacts and takes appropriate steps to eliminate them with basic troubleshooting techniques.
  • Ability to correctly identify normal and abnormal EEG patterns and recognize seizures.
  • Keeps equipment clean and in good operating condition
  • Detects instrument malfunctions and notifies chief tech, supervisor or manager of problem and maintains a log of actions taken.
  • Assures work areas are kept clean, stocked and organized in a safe, accessible and efficient way, always maintaining Joint Commission standards.
  • Takes responsibility for professional growth through participation in conferences, in-services, lectures, seminars, local/national, meetings or by reading journal
