Job Summary: Entry level trainee in the field of EEG with competency-based training under the directions of Supervisor/Educator. Job responsibilities and level of service will vary based on progression of training/competency tool. Direct technical supervision by Neurodiagnostic EEG Tech II or above is required. Under the supervision of the supervisor or manager, performs routine electroencephalograms (EEGs) used to monitor and record brain activity, and may assist in other neurodiagnostic exams requested by a physician, to assist care providers in evaluating and treating epilepsy and seizure disorders. Prior to an EEG exam, technicians review the patient's medical history; meet with patient/caregivers to explain the procedure and answer questions. They contribute to the processing of the data collected. All activities associated with exams are completed in accordance with department protocols and The Neurodiagnostic Society (ASET) national standards. EEG Technicians participate in a process of continuous learning to pursue eligibility for and achievement of ABRET Registered Electroencephalographic Technologist (R. EEG T.) certification. Upon achieving competency in procedures and exams, as determined by manager, EEG Technicians may perform some duties independently.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • New hire expectation of Registered EEG Technician (R.EEG T.) through ABRET Neurodiagnostic Credentialing and Accreditation credentials within 3 years of hire.
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems, and basic keyboarding skills.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to exercise critical thinking skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of previous clinical patient experience in a related Neurodiagnostic field (EMG, Sleep, IOM, EEG) preferred.
  • Current CPR / BLS certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Pre-Study Procedures\: Obtain patient health information and additional information from medical records and patient/caregivers. Explain the testing procedure to patient/caregivers in a manner consistent with their ability to understand in order to establish rapport and elicit cooperation.
  • Calibrate and troubleshoot equipment prior to and throughout procedure to maintain quality and safety.
  • Following 10-20 system for electrode placement, prepare the patient by measuring and marking the patient’s head to determine electrode sites. Prepare the sites for electrode placements to reduce impedance. Securely apply the electrodes. Check impedances to ensure electrode integrity. After the exam, remove electrodes, clean and disinfect the instrument for future use.
  • Perform ordered type of EEG (routine, long term, ambulatory, etc.) according to ASET national standards and HHC protocols. Modify or adjust the recording strategy and/or instrument parameters to ensure a complete, comprehensive and technically satisfactory study. Maintain physical and electrical safety of patient throughout procedure.
  • Assess patients during exams, notify clinical staff, as appropriate, to changes in clinical scenario (e.g. seizure, breathing difficulty, etc.).
  • Under direct supervision, may assist in other neurodiagnostic exams requested by a physician. For example, monitor patients during SPECT injection testing; perform EEG during Wada testing in interventional radiology suite.
  • Document patient behavior and clinical events to provide additional information for the interpretation. Comply with all documentation requirements pertaining to the EEG lab and Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.
  • Monitor video and EEG of patients undergoing continuous EEG studies.
  • Participate in a process of continuous learning to pursue eligibility for and achievement of ABRET Registered Electroencephalography Technologist (R. EEGT.) certification.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
